Can we consider Joanne as ‘self titled’?

i thought so when the album came out but as i’ve sat with it, i think no. i think a self titled LADY GAGA album would be very all over the place genre wise (everything from dance to ballads to jazz vibes), and i really hope we get that album one day. she could even do a disc one called LADY and a disc two called GAGA

I think if you just look at the album, yes. The marketing is where it got muddy and she adopted a Joanne persona, country hats and all that.

but at its core, the album’s title is only that bc it is meant to refer to her relationship to herself and her family generationally. I don’t think the album necessarily achieves all of this or goes deep enough to make these connections super effectively but the objective was very clearly to write an album that stefani could heal with—something that, after all the craziness of early Gaga, would settle the score with her inner self as it relates to her many identities (daughter, granddaughter, woman, friend, lover, global citizen, sister, niece, namesake etc.).

If she’d given the album more than six months I reckon she could have cracked it a bit more but what we got is a fine collection of songs that I think def intended to serve as a sort of self titled project but thematically she herself was only halfway there on release so the album feels kinda tepid conceptually even if the songs themselves are solid.

There's a lot of misdirections in her art. What can we call self-title regarding the artist who named herself Lady Gaga? If the answer is "an album with a variation of her dead name", then, yes, prima facie, Joanne is a self-titled album, after Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. But if you take her input, the information she always gives which conceptualizes the albums she releases ("being halfway between reality and fantasy" for Born This Way, "reverse warholian experience" for ARTPOP, "it's about my dead aunt" for Joanne" and "dance your way through your pain" for Chromatica), then no, the album is explicitly titled after her father's deceased sister. My answer leans towards no, Joanne is not her self-titled album, it's still coming.

This is what I mean about misdirections: her albums are titled something, but the information she gives about them rearranges the first possible interpretation.
