HIM820 1,874
I actually understand this if it came to a point where an actor was non binary. What complicates it though is the way voting works and comparisons, it would cause chaos and calls to cancel awards all together. Way less actors in general would be awarded too which is a hard argument to get behind.
Cameltoe Chariot 15,310
Listen... as a queer person I get where she's coming from, but like 95% of the world fits comfortably in the gender binary lol I miss the days when queer people celebrated being the weirdos of society and didn't need to see themselves reflected and validated in every single space
Anderson123 42,741
I get what they mean but it’d be messy. Most people identify as either male or female so it wouldn’t be fair. If anything, adding a Non Binary Actor could a possibility some day. The other way I see this working is if they change the categories to “Lead Drama Act”, “Lead Comedy/Musical Act”, “Suspense/Thriller Lead Act”, etc. I just can’t picture Joaquin Phoenix taking the Oscar while Renée Zellweger going empty handed if they were to give just one Lead Acting Oscar a year. The Director category has been coming up with more females recently and that’s a good thing (and it should go to whoever makes the better film of course, not because of their gender) but there’s so so many acting roles in a year that picking just 5 wouldn’t be fair to those who work hard. To even be nominated must feel amazing.
Sexxx 5,738
It should be genre based. Drama / comedy etc
Meat 18,962
But 90% of the categories are already gender neutral. Only acting ones aren’t.
Schwerk 7,453
They did this for the Dutch equivalent of the Oscar's and Emmy's. I think what helped them realize the need for this is Raven van Dorst. They have become a very successful TV host and they are intersex. They were raised female and were already famous and since a few years changed their name and no longer define as female. The TV awards would have no category to put them in if they hadn't grouped all genders. With the TV awards this change went smoothly, with the film awards people struggled more with the change. I think an actual non binary of intersex person being nominated would shut them up. Sure men tend to dominate the categories, but that is up to feminists of every gender to fight against and raise awareness for. According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch

I also think that sports shouldn't be gendered, just separated by weight/size class Agree but it would be too emasculating for men knowing that women can actually be better than men in sports. There's a reason there's women's leagues and you barely ever hear their stats. Look at how they've done Serena Williams her whole career, and tennis isn't even that popular viewer-wise. lilboyblue 6,041
Genre-based acting awards could work... and then have a "general field" Supporting/Performance of the Year as the big acting prize. But realistically, there aren't that many non-binary actors yet to move the needle on this. Sports, however, should definitely be divided into athletes' biological features. It's just fact males will have different physical capabilities than females and vice versa so there's no point mixing them unless it's something like archery, shooting or equestrian where physical prowess matters less. SpadesToStart 3,810
Current format allows them to recognize more performances, which ultimately is a good thing for most involved.
RichAssPiss 5,045
Have twenty nominees and award four Outstanding Performance of the Year trophies to the top voted candidates. It's the same star power and the same number of trophies. Lead vs. Supporting is also a farce, and sorting by genre is practically impossible because most films are hybrid genres. FarixGaga 15,552
Be gender neutral and divide categories between different genre/kind of performance/movie/song etc. so that it is still incluse but not based on a social construct bullish*t like gender. Monstermilo 5,473
good idea but it would hurt the women in the long run, the academy is sexist and all the men would win lmao whether we wanna accept it or not, ppl dont understand what being gender neutral means, right now we have to subscribe to what most ppl understand - maybe in 50 years it wont be best male or female, just best actor, but we have a long way to go
Economy 52,902
In a society with social constructs (we are social beings and there will always be some) and in a society where the majority of people identify as 1 particular gender and are proud of their femininity or masculinity, it does not make sense to go gender neutral at least not at this time Male and female actors have their own style of talking and acting based on what is perceived as feminine or masculine and while not every individual conforms to social norms of standard gender expression and that should be respected, the overwhelming majority of people as of right now still do and thus I think we should have seperate categories to celebrate each They could add best trans or non-binary actor that would be fine and more inclusive but don't get rid of the current categories I vote no
