It looks like a filter, it is as if countries around Ukraine decided to turn off their lights for no reason? Not saying that they aren't facing a blackout but...I am not sure these pictures are fully accurate. This was exactly my question and it seems the probable reason is cloud coverage that makes everything look more blurry/ darker in comparison. This explains why Romania is not facing blackouts yet appears darker. Who created the comparison pic took the 'best' before picture and 'worst' after picture (which is stupid, as an accurate comparison would have been effective in its own right). Those blurs are because satellite images don't capture the entire earth surface in one shot, so what you basically see are seperate segments layered together to make up the world map that we see. And as a result you may see some blurr and rough edges alongside the borders of those segments. Sometimes you can even see a clear line of difference (like east of sardinia). And if a segment's resolution is lower than the others neighboring it, you'll see a distinguishable blur. For example notice that there is also a heavier blur in the Venice area in italy. It doesn't mean that the picture is "filtered" to make Ukraine blackout more dramatic. These are pictures provided by NASA and shared by many reliable news outlets. So really, let's be careful before make such insinuations. The real story here should be the fact that over ten million ukrainians are without power. Let's not distract from that with these petty arguments about why the picture isn't pixel perfect. It's a satellite shot. "These are pictures provided by NASA and shared by many reliable news outlets" is a weak authority argument because all of them have their own biases and agenda. I am not saying Western media and Russian media are equally distant from the truth (they are not), but this is the same argument Russians use for believing their propaganda. In the West we have our own propaganda which is mostly aligned with the good side, but is propaganda nonetheless and can have its excesses. It's not about the pic not being pixel-perfect, it's about it being misleading because of an unfair comparasion. Simple as that, the second pic is darker that should have been to crete a more dramatic point.

Gosh do you love insisting on being wrong, even after I point out time and again that you're spreading false conspiracy theories and accusations. Here's a screenshot I took myself, which is the most recent screenshot on NASA WEBSITE DIRECTLY. It is simply the most recent one where you can see Ukraine on the map. Stop accusing people of cherrypicking and filtering. What the media did is go straight to NASA websites and pulled out the most recent map where Ukraine is visible on the map. That's it. https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/?v=-4.238502814835112,35.59231399711549,56.57079213854256,62.381177386066874&l=Reference_Labels_15m(hidden),Reference_Features_15m(hidden),Coastlines_15m,VIIRS_SNPP_DayNightBand_At_Sensor_Radiance,VIIRS_SNPP_DayNightBand_AtSensor_M15(hidden),VIIRS_SNPP_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden)&lg=true&t=2022-11-24-T12%3A00%3A00Z

I understand, but wouldn't this be the case with the picture of Ukraine fully lit as well? Wouldn't there be random blurs around the border of other countries in that picture too? I guess I don't understand why one picture isn't affected by the conditions you mentioned and the other one is, especially around the affected area. Not saying there's anything fishy or whatever but I am just trying to wrap my head around it.

They have a history of many months. You can go back to early February, and compare with the pictures from November. https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/

No, I wasn't and I was actually right. First they compared with a picture from February, not January. Go ahead, you have access to the entire history. Pick whatever date before February 24th and show us the picture you would've think would've been more appropriate. First you claimed "biased media" filtered/altered it. When it turned out it's straight from the NASA website, now you're claiming they cherrypicked. So go ahead, pick your own date from February and post the comparison between that and November 24th. I guarantee you, any date you'll pick you'll still see the full difference and the effect of the blackout. So just stop this petty debate. Admit you're wrong and move on. It's more respectful. https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/
Dojo 19,823
is the blackout only inside the yellow lines? because if you carefully look in both pics, the outside area also looks quite blurry and different in both pics? quite confusing. also, how terrible to have a blackout during the winter? worst time of the year

I may or may not do that but it's useless as the first picture is the one that spread.

The dishonesty, is that you're trying to downplay the effects of an actual blackout unfolding as we speak, affecting millions of people. I gave you the entire database, to go check for yourself. And yet you fail to show how there was any dishonesty. Don't go halfway, just admit you were suspicious and wrong on this. We all make mistakes. But doubling down on conspiracy theories and false accusations is less deserving of respect than an apology/self-correction.

Emotional Language meant to manipulate the situation (''I am right and everybody who says otherwise is a bad person'') is a tactic that can work sometimes but not always. The dishonesty is putting side by side two pictures taken in different conditions. The site you yourself linked has a photo for 23 (and 24!) February. Why use January and not February? The answer is because Ukraine was better lit that day. 29 minutes ago, Dennis said: Don't go halfway, just admit you were suspicious and wrong on this. We all make mistakes. Why do have the pretention for me to apologize when in the wrong if you don't follow your advice? lmao. First of all the picture is from February, not January as you claim. Take a look again. Second of all, there were heavy air strikes on Ukraine on February 24th. So you want to pick something before the war started. February 23rd you say would've been a better picture? Well let's take a look. OH looks like plenty of cloud obstruction in the picture. So who's being dishonest here? Is it the media who picked the most recent, cloud-free pictures or you who in your insistence on being wrong decided that this picture below would've been more appropriate PLEASE STOP. This is pointless. And even in the picture below, in the parts that are not obstructed you can see Ukraine with much more light than now. So your argument is pointless from any angle you look at it. As for the poland missile. I posted an Associated Press article when the news break out which did have the same exact headline as my thread and then updated my thread accordingly when it turned out the debris were ukrainian air defenses. You see the difference? There's no shame in self-correction. There's only shame in embarassing oneself by doubling down on being wrong.
phillipaf 685
…do you guys get how ****ing big Ukraine is?! Like look at the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitain Area… There are few clear pics of it as well, even though it‘s the most densely populated area in mainland Europe. It‘s how satellite images work. Lots of pictures stitched together with a relatively bit margin of error. However, Ukraine is huge. Hence the blurry borders. Not everything is propaganda.
