UK Supermarkets Started Rationing Eggs, As Bird Flu Affecting Supply

British shoppers looking for eggs have been met with empty shelves as the United Kingdom’s “largest ever” outbreak of bird flu and rising costs have placed pressure on egg supplies across the country.

Customers at British supermarket retailers Sainsbury’s and Tesco found eggs out of stock, while retailer Lidl has put a ration on eggs at some of its supermarket branches -- limiting each customer to three units of eggs due to the shortage.

Elsewhere, breakfast menus at restaurant and pub chains across the country are also being curtailed, with chefs seeking alternatives for eggs as they grapple with the shortages.

Asda and Lidl are limiting the number of boxes of eggs customers can buy amid supply disruptions caused by rising costs and bird flu.

Asda is limiting customers to two boxes of eggs each and Lidl is restricting customers in some stores to three boxes, while Waitrose said it had not introduced any limits but was "continuing to monitor customer demand".

Other major retailers including Tesco, Morrisons, Marks & Spencer and Co-op reassured customers that they continued to receive good supplies and were not limiting sales.

The UK is facing its largest ever bout of bird flu, with a highly pathogenic variant circulating.

Since early November, birdkeepers have had to keep their animals housed and away from wildlife to reduce the spread. When there is a confirmed outbreak on a poultry or egg farm, all the birds in the affected area are destroyed, meaning fewer eggs in the supply chain.

there are videos of farmers saying that the shortage is due to big chains not wanting to cover soaring costs for producers, not bird flu

He looks like he makes good scrambled eggs. OT this video is the first thing I thought of when I saw the title. I honestly think prices of goods just need to have more oversight at this point, pushing inflation in like this is putting the global economy at risk and it's obvious that the free market just doesn't work.
