JazzGa 14,581
They became a songwriting cliche, like rhyming "fire" with "desire" or doing the millenial whoop. Those "truck driver key changes" where u just go up a key for the last chorus stand out like a sore thumb and get pointed out by critics all the time. Don't Call Me Angel is the worst offender for this imo. dollardays 3,491
It's hard to fit a key change in a 2 min song I was listening to some older pop songs with my friends and god Umbrella is huge

Not all songs need bridges but some songs would sound so much better if they weren’t just verse->chorus->verse->chorus the end. Those songs tend to feel incomplete or unfinished and so often it’s solely to get more streams. See The Best In Everyone
RodeckDanny 2,340
I mean, key changes are interesting only when it's not the typical 1 step up for the final chorus a-la ABBA. and probably most of those key changes in that graph are THAT type of key change so IMO this doesn't mean it's becoming worse, cause that one trick can work for only so many songs. Think of songs finishing with a repeating chorus in fade-out, imagine if that had continued to be done until now Listen to my debut pop single 'Want You Bad'! Noah 26,821
I love a key-change. I feel like they‘ll make a return in a few years. All the trends right now are so focused on nostalgia and I wouldn‘t be surprised if the whole short-song Era will completely switch around again and Songs are allowed to be longer + more creative again. ⟡ ⋆ ˚。⋆🦢⋆ ˚。⋆⟡
