USA Senate Defeats Filibuster On Gay Marriage Bill. Paving Path For Protecting It.

Passage of a measure that would protect gay marriage rights nationwide crossed a key threshold Wednesday when the Senate defeated a filibuster and set the stage for final approval shortly.

Senators voted 62-37 to move the Respect for Marriage Act to the Senate for an up-or-down vote in the near future. Sixty votes were needed to overcome the filibuster and send it to the floor.

The measure would enshrine marriage equality months after Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas raised the specter of reversing the 2015 landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision recognizing same sex unions.

Biden voiced support for the Respect for Marriage Act and said he would "promptly sign it into law," after the Senate vote Wednesday. 

"Love is love, and Americans should have the right to marry the person they love," Biden said in a statement. "Today’s bipartisan vote brings the United States one step closer to protecting that right in law."

So it's back to the house of representatives and then to Biden's desk where it'll be passed into law.

John Cornyn, Texas senator, dismissed the bill as a political stunt by Democrats to scare people into thinking “that somehow that decision by the Supreme Court is in jeopardy. I don’t believe it is.”

Marco Rubio, Florida senator - "I don’t know why we’re doing that bill; there’s no threat to its status in America, I know plenty of gay people in Florida that are pissed off about gas prices."

Susan Collins, Maine senator, and one of the 12 Republican supporters of the bill, added that even without an imminent threat, "there is still value in ensuring that our federal laws reflect that same-sex and interracial couples have the right to have their marriages recognized, regardless of where they live in this country."

Mitt Romney, Utah senator - "There are important religious liberty protections that have been negotiated in, and that’s why I supported it."

Also sucks that we basically had to trade allowing religious institutions to be legally homophobic and discriminatory in order to get federal recognition for same-sex marriages.

If gay marriage is "so secure" in these Republicans' eyes, then just sign the bill protecting it?  The quicker it's law, the quicker it'll be done "taking up publicity".

Because they know this passing is a win for Democrats and they'd rather leave the LGBT community unprotected than give Dems a win
