dit 46,738
It’s cool and all but I swear there’s just so much hypocrisy in all of this. These nations hardly did anything this symbolic when the olympics where in Russia (which has a worse human rights record than Qatar especially towards LGBTQ+ ppl) or China (literally been committing a genocide on Uighurs) or Brazil which has one of the highest murder rates of trans and LGBTQIA+ youth in the world etc...it just seems like it’s easier to be critical on a Middle East nation to do moral posturing so everyone is getting involved now. Get your brownie points I guess. I still don’t trust any of these corporations. At all.

While you’re right the football community ww has been very homophobic in the past - this is a new, and most welcome development and I still think it’s valuable, albeit very late. Never trust any corporations about inclusivity though, it’s always only marketing. Is there some reason my LG7 isn't here? Has she died or something? Shipper 13,114
Yes, they are certainly doing this for publicity but something small like this can mean a lot for the LGBTQ+ community in Qatar. Imagine, this might be the first time they would see these colors up in their country and out in the open. 🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶

Never trust any corporations about inclusivity though, it’s always only marketing. I just think it is too circumstantial meaning I don't think they will follow this through with other problematic host nations unless they are also Middle Eastern. It's become trendy to be critical of Middle East nations and often times these ppl who could care less about LGBTQ+ ppl in the Mid East are the loudest to be critical because they have ulterior motives (some of them are just flat out islamaphobes, others racists, others xenophobes) and so they take advantage of stuff like this and create a pile on. Companies also do this so they can have a veneer of "morality" but if the next game is held somewhere else with a horrible human rights record but is somehow important to western imperialism, hegemony or capitalism than they will remain silent or do very little outrage. All of this to me is false outrage and I just cannot celebrate this development in good faith. It feels like an insult to our intelligence and it harms the West's credibility a lot. It's hard to see Germany being hyper critical of Qatar's very problematic human rights records and then days later support bills or laws that help apartheid in Israel again Palestinians, or do trade deals with Saudi Arabia (one of the worst human rights abusers on earth) or stay silent against Australia's horrific treatment of migrant workers and it;s horrible detention centers for refugees etc...etc...etc...This campaign against Qatar should be implemented across the board. It's too nit picky for me to be hopeful. When one atrocity is ignored and another is lambasted I understand how the world is losing faith in the West for human rights regulations and starting to even feel vengeful towards it's moral posturing. It's just frustrating overall. I hate hypocrisy but this is how politics work I guess
SlaeUrAnus 16,111
Can already smell the Republicans and homophobes spouting the “their country, their rules” nonsense. Well done USA. In my messy era.

It's just frustrating overall. I hate hypocrisy but this is how politics work I guess I get your concern and I totally agree with you on everything - though I don't think they were trying to push for a campaign on human rights across the board - it's just that Qatar made quite a noise regarding their "warnings" towards queer fans, making even some queer footballers anxious to play there. So it's a gesture and I perceive it to be symbolic overall (although some real moves would be most appreciated). Hypocritical? Sure. But I personally enjoy the presence of a rainbow flag in an untouchable position in such a place. Is there some reason my LG7 isn't here? Has she died or something? I get if they simply disagreed with me but to label me that is insane when I am notorious for being anti all these dictatorships and monarchies. I guess asking for atrocities to be called out and for big organizations like FIFA and the Olympics to be held to task when they don't is being an apologist now? a MESS
