Farmer Throws Out 300,000 Lettuces Due To Labor Shortage

Another example of how the labor shortage is helping fuel inflation and restricting supply from demand, a farmer had to dispose of 300,000 lettuce heads after he was unable to find enough labor to get them picked

and then sometimes these countries complain about immigrants who are usually the ones who do these types of jobs. Like you gotta low key pick one or the other. Either take on more immigrants from poor nations OR keep throwing your crops in the garbage. 

I guess there is also the option for farmers and tech companies to work together to innovate machines that could do even complex crop collection on a large scale. I think that's what will likely happen but that will take at least a decade or more. In the meantime, the best option is to continue brining in immigrants who are willing to do hard labor jobs like this. It's not ideal for the immigrant but I know so many who are willing to do these jobs for at least a good few years in order to escape persecution in their countries, war, violence, famine etc...

Knowing the price of lettuce in my country right now and how the other night when making burgers for dinner I decided to skip the lettuce to save money... this upsets me

The price point continues to the supermarkets and then the consumer who both aren't willing to pay more. It's for sure not a free choice for the farmer in question

What a selfish man. This has happened where I live a few times, where farmers sometimes have more fruits/vegetables than they expected and since they don't want those to go to waste they lower the price by 50% and even gift them.

Immigrants help for sure but there is a labor shortage in general right now across the board

 

Canada where I'm from has one of the highest immigration to population ratios on the planet accepting over 1% of population annually from immigration.

 

It hasn't prevented the labor shortage given in part growth such as construction requires labor and the fact that they consume as well resulting in new job openings.

 

Immigration helps to an extent especially if targeted for the stuff with the biggest shortage but I think ageing population and post-pandemic boom in general are causing the dynamics for labor shortage

Ppl keep using that argument but if there's a labor shortage u cannot fill all positions with higher pay. If u attract someone from somewhere else it just means another company has the vacancy instead

The issue here isn't having too much to sell and not being able to sell the price he wanted 

 

The issue was not having enough labor to pick it all

 

Not sure how a sale helps this????
