No need to worry for me yet, I'm from Turkey and although my country has been facing an ever-increasing democratic backslide under a semi-sectarian regime for the last 10 years, I'm still relatively safe and in a much better position than the people of Iran (although some people marched for homosexuality to be criminalized few months ago, most perceived them as radicals, for instance). I was only trying to bring out my perspective as a person from the Middle East.

I find it crazy how it's not more talked about. Just look at here, it's not even in "trending today". I remember the Ukraine thread was dozens of pages long hours after it was announced that the country had been invaded. I know there are a lot of Europeans here and that people had a closer connection to it because it's a situation that could possibly affect us more. But still

I was shocked and did a quick research and cannot find any media outlet confirming this story other than the Newsweek article that Viola Davis mentioned in her tweet. On the contrary, I found several sources reporting on misinformation circulating due to Davis' tweet and that the 15.000 number strictly refers to the detained protesters, NOT the ones sentenced to death.

However, even one death sentence over this matter is one too much and should be cause for great outrage. Iran's people deserve basic human rights.

I found this on groundreport.in, which seems to be a fact checking-website and a quick research did not make me doubt its legitimacy. There are several similar articles clarifying the story, but this sums it up pretty well:

Yeah i just added it in the original post. One death sentence has been issued but all the detained 15k could face similar fate. Iran has done this once before. And the parliament voted for ‘hard punishment’ for all protesters so future rebels would feel scared. With Iran’s history and the way dictatorship happens they all could easily be sentenced to death

This is truly heartbreaking, sometimes I just can't understand how do people like the leaders of iran exist.. My heart goes ti all the people living in iran and especially the ones that protested. This is just unbelieveable.
