Egypt to open 'largest archaeological museum in the world' by 2023

The largest archaeological museum in the world, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), is due to open later this year (or early in 2023) outside Cairo.

This dazzling showplace near the pyramids of Giza cost more than a billion dollars to build. It will hold a large chunk of Egypt’s ancient artifacts, including the treasures of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

The museum isn’t the only attraction drawing tourists back to the North African country.

New openings include the Mummies Hall in the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo, and two tombs in nearby Saqqara, including the newly restored Tomb of Djoser, with its labyrinth of hieroglyphic-covered corridors. The promise of fresh discovery means trip bookings for Egypt are up more than 100 percent from some countries.

“So many sites are getting revamped, conserved, and preserved,” says Egyptologist and National Geographic Explorer Nora Shawki. “Even going to the pyramids is smoother, with electric busses getting you there and more dining and services.”

Archaeological projects led by Egyptians have multiplied during the past decade. The shift to local leadership was accelerated by the pandemic, which grounded air travel and halted most fieldwork by foreign archaeologists.

Egyptians stepped in to fill the void, and today they lead more than 40 archaeological missions throughout the country.

The GEM is a signature project of the Egyptian government, a monumental undertaking begun 20 years ago that, because of the Arab Spring uprisings and the COVID-19 pandemic, is many years behind schedule. In a nation highly dependent on tourism revenue, and where archaeology and politics are deeply entwined, General Moftah and his staff are under orders to ensure that the GEM is a resounding success.

I love that Egyptians are in the forefront of showcasing their history and not some foreign museum in the west displaying and telling people what happened to another country's history. Hope Western museums return more stuff they "acquired" to the Egyptian government.

Well this is because Egypt belonged in the same common civilizational space as Mesopotamia, Judea, Greece etc. Its population mainly consisted in ''brown'' people and was ruled by ''brown'' people (also many Greeks which were a very powerful influence on the country). The Black ancestry is to the south of the country near Sudan (Nubia). The Sahara desert isolated Egypt from subsaharan Africa and to this day north Africa has more in common with the Middle East that with subsaharan Africa.

Everything you just said refers to modern day Egypt & not ancient Egypt. Science have discovered that the origins of (Upper) Ancient Egypt lay in Nabta Playa located in Nubia (Sudan)!
