It's looking like because Trump's endorsements in the midterm election weren't very effective, the conservative mouthpieces are going to shift attention away from Trump and towards DeathSantis for a presidential run. Which is even worse.

He would be worse if he wins but...I'm not sure at the moment that he will. He has dominated Florida, but Florida's political situation exists in bit of a bubble. He's never had to actually fight any pushback before and he won't come into national politics with the ease he came into Florida politics with. He's a lightning rod for the Republican cause, but so was Trump heading into his second election. It was proven then that if the Republican candidate poses enough of a threat, the Democrat electorate will come out in a major way. 

The thing to watch for with Desantis is the Latino vote because he did really well with Florida Latinos. But again...they exist in a bit of a bubble. Florida Latinos likely feel very differently than say a Nevada or Arizona Latino would about politics as we see with these midterm demographics. 

@PartySick You live there, you could tell us better. Do you think it's fair to say that Desantis being such a runaway success in Florida doesn't ensure that success is able to be repeated on a national scale due to how unique Florida's political situation is?

I think DeSantis' victory here has to do with a few things.

1) Republicans are stupid. I mean...you can't ignore this fact  this man has them scared of drag queens and math books ffs. He's studied Trump's ways and learned how to manipulate the pea brains.

2) Florida has been trending more and more right with every election. It's basically anti-Texas. Our state is constantly absorbing the oldest and reddest people from the rest of the country and it's a breeding ground for right wing radicalization.

3) His opponent was an ex-Republican governor. Being an ex-governor is a turn off to independents and Republicans, being an ex-Republican is a HUGE turn off to younger leftist voters which swung Dems fate on a national scale from "horrible" to "eh, not bad".

4) Val Demmings was also running for senate and having them both on the same ticket just...

5) The Floridian Democratic party is ABYSMAL. I cannot stress this enough. It's headed by a rich moron that's lost us the last several elections. I volunteered with them in 2020 and it felt like pulling teeth. Nearly everything, from sign waving to canvassing, is done independent of the party leadership itself. Absolutely zero ground game, they get trounced in fundraising, and their attack ads are limp-wristed at best. I'm not convinced he isn't purposely sabotaging us here.

So no, I don't think DeSantis is as strong as people think. Florida, as always, is a weird place and never follows national trends.

Young voters defended the Democrats nationally and the FL Dem party ran an ex-Republican and a former cop that ran ads AGAINST defunding the police  that paired with how badly the FL Dem party sucks gave the Republicans a huge win here. But that win wouldn't track to the rest of the country, no.

If it was DeSantis vs Biden in 2024, I could see DeSantis eeking out a win. If it's DeSantis vs virtually any Democrat that's sick of "reaching across the aisle" (aka one that echos the actual thoughts of their voters), DeSantis gets beat.

I also live in Florida 🙃

You're definitely right that the state is an outlier because of our conservative state and local government in most areas here. But it's also a state that people from everywhere flock to so I've found that it's a good measure of how a lot of the country thinks. 

From my point of view, republicans and right-leaning independents are still solidly into the platform the Trump administration stands for; they've just grown tired of Trump's antics. With pos DeSantis, they get all of the stupid policies with a lot less orange tantrums. That's what has me worried.
