Post production can take months, sometimes more than a year. This is especially true with special effects extravaganzas like DC or Marvel films. There has to be the editing of the live action aspects, inserting computer graphics and effects shots, sound design and sound effects editing, adding foley, looping the ADR, music composition and scoring (which can only be done AFTER the editors have achieved “picture lock”). There’s also a possibility of having to do reshoots, marketing strategies… all of the good ole fun stuff that entails a movie like Joker ESPECIALLY since it’s a billion dollar film. 

I'm sure the timeframe they set for themselves gives the studio breathing room to make the film as perfect as it can be. 

Aside from the CGI/special effects you mentioned, nothing you stated is out of the ordinary when it comes to post-production stuff. Also, Joker isn't like most Marvel or DC movies in the sense that it doesn't have big special effects. It's a more grounded and realistic story. Now, considering this one is a musical, maybe there will be bigger sets and stuff, which might require additional time. The score/soundtrack will probably take a bit longer too, but the rest of it is pretty standard. The first Joker started filming in September 2018 and had a release date of October 2019. Not to mention, Disney/Marvel—which notriously has a ton of VFX work—get a lot of their projects done in a quicker time than it'll take Joker 2.

So for all intents and purposes, they are filming early for a film that's releasing in 2024. I think, like you said, they're probably filming early to give them some breathing room. Gaga's incredibly busy, so I could imagine WB/DC wanting to work around her schedule. Also, WB/DC is in a weird space when it comes to their studio heads & executives. James Gunn and Peter Safran were just made the heads of the new DC Studios, so I think they also wanted to have the release date later rather than sooner in order to accommodate for all the shifting happening with the higher ups.

Thanks for educating me a bit in that. I haven’t (and need to) watched the first film and assumed it was another DC titan type of film.

Considering Joker will probably being wrapped in around February 2023, it's a 19 months break before the movie is out. It's incredibly long for Gaga not involving in anything else. 

So yeah I totally agree, they are also probably scheduling Joker 2 around her own schedule. She'll be a main force in promoting the movie. So she needs to be available for this.

She’s rumoured to start her pop Vegas residency again. So maybe she’s gonna keep her busy with that.

I don't think she'll go full method on this role because during the CBT she said that she's healthier now and that she believes making art without suffers (idk the exact words is but I think she's finally put her healthy first)

Although I believe she said she won’t go method when she has children, which is not yet the case. (But I’d have to find the interview again cuz I’m not 100% sure)

Yes, that is what she said. But she might have to try it sooner as I don't think she could have been full Harley during TCB.

I think the fall of 2023 was early due to post production and moreover, it is already crowded. Since this is intended to be a big film with possible Oscar nominations, only the fall of 2024 is possible. Giving an exact time early means no other major movie is released that week.

I think Gaga will focus on LG7 and/or her personal life in the meantime, with other smaller projects like updating her Vegas residency.

the promo for this movie will fall heavily on gaga as JP hates press and makes that clear while doing it. 

DC is just infamous for announcing big movies waaaaay in advance. if they wanted to do 2023, gaga would be planning her vegas dates and whatever else for next year around that. the chromatica ball was clearly booked around joker’s filming schedule (as the head of live nation confirmed). at least this one (particularly the editing) won’t be rushed like gucci was. plus she’s entering the 2025 best actress race before anyone else lol
