Variety: Gaga vs. Rihanna Oscar Race

For months Lady Gaga has sat securely on her perch— or airplane, if you will— at the head of the best original song Oscar race, with her song “Hold My Hand” perhaps the single best opportunity to hand an award to the year’s box office juggernaut Top Gun: Maverick. Sure, there are other musical superstars  in the hunt and a handful of spectacular song and dance sequences to consider, but who was really going to go toe-to-toe with the combined power of Gaga and a billion dollars?

And now, enter Rihanna. The multihyphenate icon, who hasn’t released new music since 2016, will have the lead single on the soundtrack for Wakanda Forever, with the song “Lift Me Up” co-written by Tems, composer Ludwig Göransson, and Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler. The song was written “as a tribute to the extraordinary life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman,” according to the press release. It will be released on Friday, October 28, two weeks ahead of the film’s November 11 release.

Any new music from Rihanna would be attention-getting, obviously, but the Black Panther franchise has a strong track record, too; the soundtrack for the first film held the top spot on the Billboard 200 in early 2018, and Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All the Stars” was a best original song Oscar nominee. It lost, as it turns out, to Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born’s “Shallow.” But Rihanna has an extra special advantage this time around— she’ll be headlining the Super Bowl halftime show on February 12, the day before this year’s Oscar nominations will be announced. Now do you see why this will be such a fun race to follow?

Wakanda Forever starts screening for press this week, and if it’s up to the high bar set by Black Panther the Oscar buzz should only start getting louder. Sure, superhero movies are a tough sell for awards, and superhero sequels even more so, but this is a unique franchise in many ways. The emotional, artful trailers promise far more than the average superhero CGI-fest, and Coogler remains one of the most exciting up-and-coming directors working, making his eventual directing Oscar nomination feel inevitable (even if he’s not eager to become an Academy member himself.) Could he be nominated for best director and best original song in the same year? This is the time of year to get your hopes up about Oscars, so why not aim high.

I'm fine with a Gaga nom and no win. She already won this award with Shallow and HMH isn't as strong. A nom would be nice to keep her name in the Oscars conversation and hopefully she'll be back in the actress race for Joker in 2025.

But now imagine 3 time Academy Award winner Lady Gaga after Joker 2.

It’s annoying because Gaga could have easily won during a slow year…but if she loses to Rihanna it will probably be justified and for the best. We all know HMH isn’t Gaga’s strongest track. Gaga has already proven her movie soundtrack excellence a million times over with ASIB so I’d be okay with this loss.

I’d rather Gaga to take an acting win over a song win atp and would be here for Rihanna to get it but does she write songs? If she’s not credited I don’t think her name is would hold much sway.

Is there some reason my LG7 isn't here? Has she died or something?

the rihanna song is to honor chadwick. it’s def winning, and i’ll be very happy for rihanna. if gaga won again, it would hurt her in 2025. i don’t think most academy members would be rushing to give her a third oscar that soon (if she won for HMH)

She is credited.

Eh. She already won this. Plus, Oscar voters are weird. If she wins twice for best song, I could lowkey see them not voting for her in acting in the future. Like, in their minds, Gaga is a singer, not an actress. Silly, but I think it's sorta true.

Give it to RiRi. (Who I also love. So it's a win win for me.)

Gaga will have her moment again. i’m sort of all for Rihanna to grab this if the song is great.
