Donna summers and Jones ( among others ) were naked onstage defying the puritanism in diverse ways since the 70's and on during the 80's conservative "come back" with the aids craze, years before Madonna. Yet the medias will only remember the white example and erase the black ones.
Evil R 1,084
You miss all the point. It's not about being sexy or being naked. Just listen to her Women of Year award speech: “There are no rules — if you’re a boy. If you’re a girl, you have to play the game. What is that game? You are allowed to be pretty and cute and sexy. But don’t act too smart. Don’t have an opinion. Don’t have an opinion that is out of line with the status quo, at least. You are allowed to be objectified by men and dress like a slut, but don’t own your sluttiness. And do not, I repeat, do not, share your own sexual fantasies with the world." “Be what men want you to be. But more importantly, be what women feel comfortable with you being around other men. And finally, do not age. Because to age is a sin. You will be criticized, you will be vilified, and you will definitely not be played on the radio.”

It's ridiculous how people here seem to forget where she is coming from. She is definitely on the more provocative side of elaborating her opinions and views but what's new. Rather than being outraged by her provocative manner, given her history and how aware she is about her past in her opinions that provocativeness and unapologetically rebellious sense afterall should be seen as a positive rather than a negative fan-tas-tique, chic, freak, slaaaay

Just listen to her Women of Year award speech: ( ... ) "You are allowed to be objectified by men and dress like a slut, but don’t own your sluttiness" Cher, Summers and Jones we mentioned as older examples weren't owning it according to you? To me they sure did. "But don’t act too smart. Don’t have an opinion. Don’t have an opinion that is out of line with the status quo, at least." Cher has plenty of opinions she gladly shares lol. As out of line as Madonna's ones. Same for Jones even if very few people listen sadly. "Be what men want you to be. But more importantly, be what women feel comfortable with you being around other men." You think the same 3 examples above were not bold and self affirmed enough to already not fit that definition of what was "correct"? Grace Jones for example was deemed crazy by both men and women and she would slap a dude on TV if he was disrespectful to her so how was she the cookie cutter woman men want to see unlike a Madonna? If anything it's Jones and her agressive androgyny who wasn't how she was expected to be more so than Madonna. "And finally, do not age. Because to age is a sin. You will be criticized, you will be vilified, and you will definitely not be played on the radio.” They also had to face that and fought against that. Cher is still the only having a #1 hit in her 50's and it she did before Madonna, Jlo or Sia got one in their early 40's. Tina Turner was in her 40's having a giant hit the very year Madonna's career took off. Before an aging Madonna pushed the limits even further it's these ones who broke the stereotype that women passing 40 yo had to either go away or at least remove the strongly affirmed, sexy, crude, loud, opiniated etc aspects of their art/ interviews.
