Taylor Swift is Overrated

In my opinion Taylor Swift is overrated. Now, before I get attacked, I don’t mean this as an attack to Taylor Swift because she is still a good artist, but I am basing my opinion on all the accolades, acclaim, and records Taylor Swift is breaking in comparison to the talent and music that she makes. For example, I listened to Midnights and I found the album to simply be ok. The production is good but nothing innovative. Her lyrics are also good but nothing deep, thought provoking, or even something different that what she has sung about before. People are also praising her melodies but artists like Gaga consistently have much better melodies with much less acclaim. Listening to Taylor Swift’s music is usually at the very least a pleasant experience. But I never left thinking “this is a masterpiece, this is amazing, or this is surprising”. However, if I just read her album reviews these kind of thoughts are exactly what I think I would have after listening to her music. I think Taylor Swift simply managed to find the sweet spot that appeals to a broad audience. But I am not sure 90+ metacritic scores, awards, or streaming records accurately depict the quality of work that she provides. And in this sense, the overrated label comes to mind.

If a musician appeals to the public, and if the public willingly listens to, relates to and enjoys the music, I don't think it can be called overrated. It simply is popular.

But from a critical perspective, yes, the albums have been overrated by the critics. Not just her album. We are living in a time when you don't really have to make a legendary album to get a 85+ on metacritic.

Also, let's not compare Taylor with Gaga. They create different genres. You don't expect a song like Alice or Babylon to be popular with the general public. The sound itself is catered to a particular target audience, not the whole GP. Which is not the case for ARUTW or INLA.

Wonder why every time some other big popstars releasing an album that were a hit with the gays, suddenly they were called Overrated? :oprah:

Like, calling artists you don't like overrated is the most overrated thing, esp. as of late.

Happened to YONCÉ to few months ago.

Will Rihanna's new release will get her called overrated too next? Curious :oprah:

Like, what is it? Bitterness? Jealousy? If so, since jealousy is a disease, I am hoping y'all get well soon. :diane:

i love how threads like these appear like clockwork whenever a pop girlie releases a new album & contribute absolutely nothing to the discourse :diane: major pick-me-girl attitude

I think she's just popular and really good at what she's doing (business wise and fan service wise). Although in my opinion I don't think she steps outside her box and take risks, unlike other artists.

I’m not even gonna read this. Came here to say we always get these threads every time she drops something. Like you either get it or you don’t. No need to sell your side.

Her music is definitely overrated for sure. Her writing has always been great, but she hasn’t  had any new standout songs from her in years. I’ve been following her for a while now, really invested since she released RED the first time.

That being said, she as a person is definitely not overrated. The amount of care and thought she puts into her work is absolutely stellar, she’s always coming up with new promos, new ways to bond to her fans and so on. And I think that’s the sweet spot - super dedicated fans for pretty mediocre music. Which is fine, just nothing I personally get excited about anymore. ♥️

She's popular and not overrated because a lot of people can connect to her lyrics. Also, the way her albums progressed is like the perspective and life experiences of the average person growing up and her songwriting has consistently improved as she matured. You may not love her now but she is on her way to becoming a legendary songwriter and overall iconic artist of her generation.

I see where you are coming however you can find her overrated while others do not (me). I think this speaks to how we have become very caught up with trying to convince everyone to agree with us which simply is not going to happen and it simply becomes exhausting for everyone

taylor Swift's strong point is song writing listen to folklore/evermore..her vocal is pretty average and she never claim to be a whitney, mariah, celine type of singer but you cant deny her songwriting abilities!

most artist dont write their music rihannna and katy perry for example..they get songs from Sia,Max Martin, Dr. Luke

while taylor writes her own szhit.

Threads like this appear when the artist that is being talked about releases because that is when you get reminded how “overrated” they are. Also if you read my post I included actual reasons for why I think TS is overrated.

Is it true tho? These overrated discussion only happens when there's a crazy hype around a project, not for every release by a popstar imo.

Each release of hers is presented as groundreaking by a legion of fans and by medias.

She's also sold to us like a female MJ time to time which, despite all her talent and success, isn't really realistic as no current stars is even close of what he achieved.

No shade, I like her but I highly doubt so.

i dont get why ppl try to make her something more than what she is

shes a pop singer with a super mediocre voice but better than average songwriting skills

i truly do not get the hype - with beyonce i dont stan her anymore but i can recognize that shes an insane vocalist and performer

taylors voice is not anything special

taylor cant dance, she doesnt have much stage presence and her lyrics can only  be appreciated by her stans - its good but its not revolutionary.

i cant believe ppl are putting her on the same level as mariah, whitney and MJ.........

has the bar been lowered that much????????
