Canada's Crop Yield Surges 65% In 2022, Volume Straining Rail System

Canada posted a much stronger crop yield than normal in 2022 (75 Million tones in Prairies vs 49 Million last year, a 65% increase) especially in grains and staples such as wheat, barley, canola etc. It is good news for farmers who had a below average year in 2021 due to unfavorable weather

 

While Canada is one of the few places on Earth where grains grew better than normal this year farmers who took a beating last year may have to put up with an extension in their misery as they may face delays in getting payed...

 

The reasons is that the rail system is still facing hurtles in catch up for pandemic disruption. And now that an unusual volume in agriculture has swamped the system, it is "challenging" to move it all

 

Farmers are currently competing and trying to order as much as 11,000 rail cars to move the 75 million times produced this year
