The marketing for this seemed to be nonexistent.

It is no surprise it's a huge flop.

I actually couldn’t escape the marketing for this movie! I didn’t see any marketing for that movie smile but my friend said it was the scariest movie she had ever seen.

I saw Smile marketing everywhere! They had a lot of Twitter marketing, even their own hashtag. And they had paid actors standing smiling at sports events!

I think a big part of this movie's downfall was its title, which has next to nothing to do with the film. I just looked up the synopsis and the main cast move to Amsterdam at the start and then move to NYC, so Amsterdam being remotely relevant as a title vanishes very early on, so why it was chosen as the title is anyone's guess. I'm sure anyone coming across this title randomly thought: "Amsterdam? I'm not interested in anything to do with the Netherlands" and moved on. Don't underestimate how easily potential viewers will decline from researching your movie to any degree purely because the title didn't connect, wasn't descriptive enough, wasn't meaningful enough or didn't convey the intended message. Whoever green lit that title really dropped the ball. It doesn't matter if there's a star-studded cast all over the poster, the precedent has been set with a title that doesn't mean anything to the viewers (and, as it turns out, is irrelevant to the whole point of the movie as well). And yes, I think news spreading of the director's misdeeds haven't helped either. A movie like this doesn't exactly scream "you need to see this in a cinema," it seems more like a rent-at-home release. Plenty of people only go to the cinema for action movies and anything that would benefit from watching on the big screen in general. The price of movie tickets today is extortionate and the cost of living crisis is real. If it's not a movie based on a bestselling book, a sequel or a superhero film, it's going to struggle, what with the way the world is right now.

There's more that goes into hiring a singer for a role than just being talked about. There have been plenty of successful singers throughout time but not all of them get offered movie roles. When you're a singer, it comes down to singing talent (if it's a singing role), name recognition, pure star power magnetism or all those things. I think Taylor's being selected because she has a massive devoted fanbase who supports everything she does and therefore, they'll go to see her in a movie. I think Cats did the same thing, which is why they bigged up her very minor role in marketing to make it look as if she was in more of the movie than she actually was. But we've seen with other films starring singers that a big fanbase doesn't automatically equal movie success. And I don't think it's a case of she's just choosing the wrong films, I think she only gets offered a role occasionally, so she just takes those rare opportunities, as long as it fits in her schedule. Maybe she doesn't mind if it's not a big hit, but just does acting in order to give her fans more content or just to keep her name out there in between albums?

I’m in the US too and I first heard of this movie last week on GGD. I haven’t seen a single ad at home or in public

Maybe it depends where you are.  I'm in Texas. Maybe they just did it here.

I guess that makes sense I didn’t know about it because I’m not on Twitter and I don’t do sports
