Debithius 6,056
The text passed by a wide margin on Thursday: 433 votes in favour, 123 against and 28 abstentions. This is believed to be the first time an EU institution declares a member state is not a proper democracy, an essential prerequisite to join the bloc. ... Hungary is no longer a fully functioning democracy, members of the European Parliament declared on Thursday in a non-binding but highly symbolic report. Instead, the country should be considered a "hybrid regime of electoral autocracy" in which elections are regularly held but without respecting basic democratic norms. "There is increasing consensus among experts that Hungary is no longer a democracy," the lawmakers said, citing a series of international indexes that have in recent years downgraded Hungary's status. ... Lawmakers raise concerns about a long list of fundamental rights they believe to be under threat, including the electoral system, the independence of judiciary, privacy, freedom of expression, media pluralism, academic freedom, LGBTIQ rights and the protection of minorities and asylum seekers. MEPs also criticised the EU institutions for allowing democratic backsliding to go unchecked. The Parliament "expresses deep regret that the lack of decisive EU action has contributed to a breakdown in democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights in Hungary, turning the country into a hybrid regime of electoral autocracy," the interim report reads. ----- Read more here: https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2022/09/15/hungary-is-no-longer-a-full-democracy-but-an-electoral-autocracy-meps-declare-in-new-repor

eifulien 3,044
Sending my love and respect to the Hungarians here. I've been in Budapest a while ago, to this day it's still one of the most beautiful places I've visited. Last year I had the chance to spend some time in Szeged working on a LGBTQ+ project with Háttér. I think it's very important that we as Europeans show appreciation for the Hungarians out there who are fighting on a daily basis against this tyranny. Another important point to make since someone already mentioned the usual "get out of there" message. You know, it's one of the most common things you can see on social media nowadays, whenever an intelligent, well-educated person goes out and criticises the corruption and the lethal at this point mediocrity of my country (Bulgaria). I guess that's a thing in most Eastern European countries where there's a stubborn, conservative portion of the population that's truly resilient to positive change, quite unfortunately. These people are stuck in old times and they act in a very hostile manner towards people willing to bring change and progress. I used to accept the "well if you want this so bad, then go to [insert any Western country], here it's been like that and it'll stay the same, no space for [insert any reason to be discriminated against - race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc.]. BUT then I asked myself why? I mean sure, I appreciate these people's belief that I'll manage abroad but like why do I have to give up on all the comfort of being in my homeland just because I don't fit in their idea of what the people here should be? So yeah, I've come to the conclusion that going abroad should be a purely personal decision and while I'm here I'll be fighting for a better reality for me, for my community and really for everybody. I share all of this to say to Hungarian Monsters - don't give up on Hungary, cause it f*cking belongs to you as much as those nasty bigots who have taken over the governing organs. You're no less representative of what Hungary is and what this beautiful country could stand for! It's just that we've truly entered one of those crucial moments in history where we have to stand up and fight for the things we believe are human rights. Lots of love, stand strong! @hausofgay @PatrickMonster @danbekim
