I always had a lot of respect for her, a long and very intriguing life lived and she always seemed incredibly down to earth and likeable to all. Indeed, she felt like the one unifying factor for all of the UK and abroad (everyone I've met from other countries loves her even if they don't get the monarchy), somewhat fitting of our current divisive landscape that that's gone now.

Dedicating your life to the service of others isn’t easy and she did it for longer, and with more warmth, dignity and goodwill, than I think any could have expected or asked.

How do I explain the mix of emotions I feel right now. I live in a post-colonial country, from a tribe whose entire identity was uprooted for Brits - for their labour, their religion, their culture, their way of being. By the time Elizabeth was coronated, we had only just begun to establish an independent country. She has reigned longer than my people found recognition in our own country, as the rest of India scrambled in its bid to establish a functional democracy. We are so incredibly grateful to have exited our colonial history - a stain that can never be removed fully from the Crown - and throughout Elizabeth's reign, it seems to have been decade after decade of rummaging through the rubble they left behind. I resent the Crown, rightfully so, and yet I can't reconcile that with the fact that I feel empathy towards an old lady in her deathbed. Certainly not just any old lady either. Despite what little I know of Elizabeth's vices, I can't help but be moved by the significance of this moment. It feels as if something has shifted a little in the world, because I haven't known a world, a geopolitical arena, not even celebrity and pop culture without her in it. She outlived my grandparents, and for a while it really did nearly become unfathomable to me that one day, she might really be gone; that currency notes would change, iconography would transform, at least a slight shift in the tide of the political atmosphere is likely ahead. I think it's perhaps expected to feel a sense of the significance of a moment such as this. I just have no room in my heart to be petty right now. Elizabeth wore the jewels of my country and donned wealth that accumulated over centuries of exploitation. I wouldn't know what to think of myself in her shoes. Is it wrong that I still wish her to "rest easy"?

I think you’ve explained this very well and it’s natural to feel conflicted.  The UK and the monarchy has a very complex past with the rest of the world.  Being able to acknowledge that history but also pay respects is great.

Her running away from George stabbing a bowl of chocolate is so funny to me. She wasn't just a symbol, or a title, she was a human. A Mother, a Grandmother, a Great-Grandmother.

Feeling so many mixed emotions! The kid in me that grew up loving the royal family is sad but the older, more educated adult in me says I should be resentful. Perhaps I can be both. Here’s a bit of what I shared on Facebook:

What a sad day for the world, but what a life lived! I put a bit of the live news coverage on for my students when the news broke. The monarchy’s past is not lost on me. As someone who teaches many first generation students from Nigeria, I must acknowledge the colonial past of the monarchy and its wealth that was built off the backs of many of my students’ ancestors. But one can also acknowledge the magnitude of this moment and the fact that the Queen did the best she could with the situation she was born into, living a life of charity in juxtaposition with that of her pillaging ancestors. She was always a beacon of civility and class in a very turbulent world. May she Rest In Peace.

Can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not. If it is, no need for whataboutism, two wrongs don’t make a right. Just because there are injustices in the world that some people/countries don’t want to deal with doesn’t mean others can’t tackle there’s if they so choose.

Ima miss her lil outfits. I hope this change brings about the end of the monarchy and the return of assets to their rightful communities, but it's obvious we're living in the worst timeline so I'm sure whatever comes next will be awful.
