While looking at Grace Jones’ second studio album, FAME, I noticed the genre “art pop”.  I clicked it, and it took me to the official “art pop” page on Wikipedia.  I found it strange that the page mentions many many decades of artists, from 1960-today, but no mention of Lady Gaga or her album ARTPOP.

While Mariana Diamondis, Lorde, Madonna, Lana Del Rey are mentioned, Gaga is not even listed here:

is Gaga officially a non-art pop artist ? :mark:

thoughts?

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

Well yeah Gaga isn't an art pop artist, she's a pop (and jazz) artist

Even ARTPOP itself isn't really art pop (except maybe the title track)

Soft, soothing, and succulent

Yes, she doesn’t stick to one specific genre, and she is also a collaborative artist, in more recent years at least.

but even bad romance references art/cinema !  So she has dabbled in art pop genre , and she tried to devote an entire era and album to the genre, so I am surprised there’s no mention of her in the 2010s section on that wiki page

“Art pop (sometimes hyphenated or written as one word) is a loosely defined style of pop music[1]influenced by art theories[6] as well as ideas from other art mediums, such as fashion, fine art, cinema, and avant-garde literature” (according to the wiki page)

again, idk I just feel like she does incorporate other art mediums in her music/visuals, such as fashion , fine art, cinema, literature etc

But obvi I’m not an expert on the topic so ! Lol !

Cause there’s not one song on ARTPOP that’s Art Pop. Gaga has never done a song that’s art pop. Also, what Gaga considers ARTPOP is not really related to the genre of art pop so her influence on the genre besides the similarity of the name is minimal. That’s why she isn’t mentioned.

I love how all three of y’all just kinda didn’t care to explain what the genre actually is besides saying “Gaga isn’t it” :mark: because looking around online it seems like a vague concept

It’s Wikipedia. You can add her.  Maybe whoever listed the names doesn’t like her. It’s just a person. We could change it!

Should we add an entire section on the page devoted to lady Gaga’s album and the 2013 renaissance of ARTPOP ? Lmfao

@RihBeyGa Art-pop the genre is loosely defined but I would list artists like Björk, Grimes, Kate Bush,Fiona Apple, Fka Twigs,Sevdaliza, Eartheater and Imogen Heap as being in or adjacent to that genre, No shade to ARTPOP it’s one of my favorite albums but the the only song I could rlly consider Art-pop is ARTPOP the song.

Here is the Wiki def of the term art-pop

Art pop (sometimes hyphenated or written as one word) is a loosely defined style of pop music influenced by art theories as well as ideas from other art mediums, such as fashion, fine art, cinema, and avant-garde literature.

But I do feel like a lot of Gaga’s music , even on the fame, TFM, btw, and ARTPOP, references art, cinema, and fashion

That’s a pretty general definition though that could apply to any song of any genre. Like, if a hip hop song referenced cinema it wouldn’t be called art pop automatically. And while Gaga references these things a lot in her lyrics and music videos, Art pop is a musical genre first and foremost and none of Gaga’s songs sounds anything like the music of the artists listed on Wikipedia.
