I literally don't care. I mean as long as they are producing good shows nobody will notice a thing. So many old shows like Sopranos I wanna watch. And with the GOT prequel this is the perfect time to get a subscription. I mean what does less diverse even mean? I'm sure there will still be people of color in their shows lol. Just got my subscription because Netlix has literally become TRASH. I'd take a good 'less diverse' show over GARBAGE any time of the day.

But representation matters, even if it's not done as it should. We, non-white, queer people have been used and mocked to enhance the white main characters for AGES. Our only purpose was to be there in the background, sometimes not even as a plot device.

And while I do agree that some of the representation we have (Netflix, mostly) is embarrassing, taking that power from us as creators is just infuriating.

Yes, good content is always better but there's TONS of creator whose ideas are not taken into consideration simply because they're not appealing to the white masses.

PG.

Well they made House of the Dragon and that is understandably a less diverse cast save for Velaryon.

Imagine if they made an asian Targaryen just for diversity's sake. That will not fit the storyline and will enrage the righties. 😂

I mean do we actually know this is true? Or just this quote from a former employee?

why is HBO crashing n burning like this?

HBO seems too aggressive recently with the content trying to compete with other streaming service...

Like... too many flagship show with unreal budgets, which don't think it's sustainable in the long run.

I think some people in the left wing in the US ruined it. By being overly dramatic, too extreme in their thoughts, where things like "if u dont like x you are racist" can piss of anybody, even a self-proclaimed left wing. Some are so pissed off by these people they start rejecting anything "left wing" meaning anything progressive, because of the extremist progressive "wokes"

I disagree. I think the problem is massive and re-emboldened racism and homophobia. I don't think pointing those things out creates them. If people don't want to be asked to empathize with racial and sexual minorities in media, there was already a problem there before the left allegedly riled them up. They just always wanted to be bigots.

Plot twist: You're both right at the same time. :vegas:

Regarding HBO Max: I just hope they don't cancel Hacks! :ohno:

It's a show about dragons, but Asians are where you draw the line?

I understand but I have faith there will still be plenty of diverse content across all streaming platforms . As an Indian, Indonesian and Dutch mixed gay person myself seeing more Indian and gay characters being cast has been refreshing. But there's so many streaming platforms and besides I don't rely on Hollywood for all my content. I also watch Bollywood. In the end I think it will be just fine.

"They reportedly fear WBD is rejecting “left-wing, diverse content in favor of more homogenous, Middle America-friendly fare.”

what does this exactly mean? left wing? more homogenous? less diverse?

The new CEO, Zaslav, is a conservative and have been praising Fox news in the past. So make your guess.

This tracks with what the CEO of my media company is saying (I work for another one of the big ones, not WBD).

This is his viewpoint, not mine: diversity programming works only in subscription-based business models like Netflix and now Disney+ because the goal is to attract as many subscribers as possible, right? In traditional television (like for Zaslav's entire career), the more eyeballs you get on a piece of content the higher you can charge for advertising. The audience doesn't need to be diverse for you to make money, it just needs to be large. So, just like WBD is going back to the old model of the film business (releasing exclusively in theaters first), they are doing the same with the TV business... the old model of big ratings = big money.

Hey, Im Asian i would love to have asians there but then I see that it does not fit the actual narrative and it seems forced.

Geographically, Westeros is not where Asians are found but if they do introduce a whole new region west of westeros, which is the East, then it fits. As of now, having an Asian there does not really fit the story and feels like a diversity hire. I advocate for real roles and storylines and not just including random POC just for the sake of screen diversity.
