Dojo 19,365
“I’m torn about what to say right now, because I’m supposed to just talk about it; I have very complicated feelings around it,” Kravitz has now told the Wall Street Journal about how she decided to comment on the Oscars slap. “I wish I had handled that differently. And that’s okay.” Kravitz’s post on the slap sparked backlash on social media, with many Will Smith supporters bashing her for comments she made previously about Smith’s son, Jaden Smith. The backlash has left Kravitz thinking differently about speaking out on social media. “It’s a scary time to have an opinion or to say the wrong thing or to make controversial art or statements or thoughts or anything,” Kravitz told WSJ. “It’s mostly scary because art is about conversation. That should, in my opinion, always be the point. The internet is the opposite of conversation. The internet is people putting things out and not taking anything in.”

Ziggy 10,828
I disagree. That was conversation happening to what she said. It just happened to be a very uneven one and I think celebs need to get that. It’s not “cancel culture” sh*t. It’s simply that you putting something out to the masses to read and the masses now have an enormous, multi-faceted megaphone to talk back. That makes it super hard on the sayer to say anything back as it’s like who do you talk to, but the phenomenon of dialogue starting from celebs saying **** and people responding is not new. It’s just easier to have record of the responses now, mostly. i think it’s also worth pointing out that it isn’t like she wrote a dissertation on the subject lmao her thoughts were a pretty common response from those offended by it. Obobo 2,721
I agree with her. There’s one thing to be against somebody’s opinion but it’s mentally unhealthy when people harass and stalk the social media of celebs online. Especially that people are so privileged they demand the world to bend to their viewpoint so they don’t get offended. Art got boring after cancel culture. The way that artists have to change lyrics to songs when it wasn’t even their intention to offend for a word not part of their culture for an angry tweet with 1k likes…….. What kind of art have you been consuming? Because there's so much amazing and interesting and exciting art out there and none of it is boring, and art that is boring is certainly not boring because of 'cancel culture' but because it's just boring. Changing a lyric or avoiding certain words is not the end of the world and it definitely doesn't ruin art (e.g. Bey changing that one word on a 16-track album full of great, fun songs). Art that offends people (and I mean actually offends people, not the 10 Will Smith stans on Twitter who replied to what Zoe said) and trashes them for 'fun' has been and will always be sh*t art, regardless of 'cancel culture'. I think they mean there's a fear in the background, a fear that doesn't allow freedom in art. Let's say u wanna write something that's a metaphor for war in Ukraine, there can be a fear now to be "cancelled". That people say "wow they are exploiting war to make a song" "wow what does this mean? does it mean she likes Putin?" nit picking every single thing so u end up just writing a boring simple love song, or talk about how ur ass bounces and is firm. We talking about Madonna pushing boundaries, not being just mean and evil

We talking about Madonna pushing boundaries, not being just mean and evil Well many of this criticism is valid. I don't see the point of writing a song about Ukraine and profiting from it for example, unless it's done in a good way (e.g. not dramatizing the war for profit or idk making fun of it or whatever). There are SOOO many ways to push boundaries and make groundbreaking art (not that I think everyone should or can do that) without fearing being attacked. To stick to artists I know and love, Bjork has been doing that since the 90s and has continued doing it with her recent work, so has Arca, etc. I genuinely don't get the fear factor, especially when the whole 'cancel culture' thing is mostly fiction and literally almost no one gets 'cancelled' in a life-changing way (I mean, look at artists like Nicki Minaj...). Accountability has to exist so we can all evolve and grow as humans and that's nothing new. At the end of the day, Twitter stans are a small pool of people who sometimes yes can temporarily ruin careers (and rightfully so in the case of some artists who are total sh*ts), but most of the time it's just useless online banter that no one will remember after a month or two.
