JRCF29 8,230
One Washington State Republican who voted to impeach former President Trump won his primary Saturday while another was locked in a dead heat with a Trump-backed opponent. Rep. Dan Newhouse will face Democrat Doug White in November, where he will be favored to keep the 4th district seat in GOP hands. His nearest Republican rival, Loren Culp, is a former police chief who was present for the riots on January 6, 2021. His loss will sting Trump, who endorsed him early in his campaign to unseat Newhouse. Next door, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler was fighting for her political life into the weekend, and facing increasingly bleak prospects as more vote totals are released by elections officials. In early returns Tuesday night, Hererra Beutler appeared likely to cruise to renomination in the district she's represented for a decade. Joe Kent, an Army veteran who received Trump's endorsement, gradually closed the gap as more counties reported vote totals, and there are still a few thousand outstanding votes—largely from areas that have thus far favored Kent. Whichever Republican moves on to the general election will face Democratic nominee marie Perez, who will start as the underdog for the 3rd district seat.
