Celebs turned silent: Roe, Climate, Gay Rights, Etc

I think the dead silence on many celebrities, particularly some “irrpolitical” ones (Adele, Taylor, for example) on the repeal of Roe and other issues is disturbing.

 

It’s the MOST concerning to me though that those most influential with the next generation - INFLUENCERS - are radio silent. TikTok’s biggest stars, who are alleged “allies” most the time, have said NOTHING. Meanwhile Andrew Tate, Barstool, and other alt right pipeline is running rampant on the platform.

 

For a while, Hollywood was our biggest defense to the right wing culture war. Late night shows and pop stars kept the younger generations inspired by liberalism. 

Now the Republican Damelio family & Elon/Portnoy/Kanye crowd OWNS the youth internet access.

Thats the problem. Repubs fight against issues that are important to them through actual means that get things done while the left waits for a celebrity to post on social media. In the meantime they focus on fake outrage that a huge majority of the public doesnt care about and is actually embarrassing. People are fleeing dem run cities for a reason. High crime, high taxes etc etc but the only thing you hear from the left are pronoun usage and to fear the police. When people have jobs and safe neighborhoods those things are secondary.

Maybe they no longer feel like it’s worth all the hassle anymore. I mean let’s face it, what’s a notes paragraph from a celebrity going to do about it? One scroll down the comment section and it will be nothing but arguments, hatred and trolls, which certainly doesn’t help. Add onto that the general thought of these celebrities being very privileged and not dealing with these type of situations the same way as the general population would, basically making the outspokenness of these celebrities come across as tone deaf, or pandering, or unneeded.

Things don’t seem to be working the same way they used to when it comes to celebrities and activism, especially now with social media and the way that works.

I believe while performative, celebrities that interact with people who arent fully developed, politically-minded adults (such as TikTokers like the Hype House) could have a huge effect. Letting 14 year olds be brainwashed by Joe Rogan as opposed to inspired to support gays by Gaga, will have long term effects imo.

Trust me I HATE performative activism. But it’s better than radio silence

This sounds like you’re talking about democrats fleeing to find better pasture in conservative towns. Most dems leaving a city are… moving to another city or finding another Democrat run state or suburb. The other people will say they were fleeing because of “high taxes or crime” which in reality it was probably more because of covid mandates. A large group of people are still citing mask and vax mandates as reason why they left or currently leaving. They want to live in places where large amounts of people are not vaxed. There are literal Facebook groups that help them find these communities across states like Texas and Florida. No where in these groups do you find that crime or taxes being a big priority. So were these people ever going to be a vote in the right direction for their city? No. They were conservatives who were tired of being in the minority, and it’s been happening way before Covid. Political alignment is growing increasingly important when someone decides where to live. But don’t let them use current buzzy excuses like the “high crime and taxes” when that is not why a large percentage of them are leaving. Plus, the rate they are moving post Covid is only really significant because it’s opposite of decades long trends that Democrat cities have more people migrating to them then the suburbs and rural areas. People are still leaving the suburbs and moving to all of the cities, it’s just not important to write about.

Thanks for the reasoned reply. I agree that there are many reasons. And I also agree that it’s easy to fall prey to buzz words that are being used. But I think we can draw reasonable conclusions to what is happening. If the highest states where people are migrating out of are dem run and the states people are moving to are republican run, that’s not a coincidence. And what do those states have in common? To not think crime rates and cost of living isn’t one of them I think is naive. My main point though is that whatever those reasons are, is what the left needs to focus on and not be distracted by issues that aren’t as important to a majority of Americans. I really don't like this performance activism perspective on celebrities. Even if it's for clout will still need celebrities to speak for awareness purposes. Elon Musk to anyone with common sense does not actually appeal to most Republicans ideals, but he gets idolized by the right and as a result has contibutes to extreme influence. We need to let celebrities speak on left leaning issues without attacking them and hurting the left in the progress.

but that's actually a really dangerous thing to happen. it feels like losing intellectual people, artists, who are important to inspire society with their commentary and look on things. Them shutting down is like as a society we lose guidance and topics to speak about. And their platform is huge, just take MeToo.

Nowadays, celebrities/influencers/etc are crucified for almost anything they say or do, or don’t do. And “cancel culture” has everything to do with it. Although I understand the importance of people saying things because they do have a platform to reach masses, I don’t think everything needs to always be addressed. Who knows what is happening behind the scenes anyways.

Thank you for the source, I’ll definitely look at it. Just be aware though that FEE is a conservative libertarian think tank, so their own mission is to promote limited government (little to no taxes) among other popular conservative policies and beliefs. That just raises the possibility of bias.
