I’m pretty sure Beyonce must have recorded her song way before Lizzo though. She recorded Renaissance during the pandemic

Sure, but even Lizzo has a new version with changed lyrics…

People here trying to cancel Bey check your bias.

Going against women when they're a certain age or have received a certain level of success in their 30s/40s is a thing. It always comes down to women being critisized for these comparably little reasons as they get older or as they stayed longer at the top of the game, we now see here Bey who before she even fully had her comeback she has to already handle a mass of people questioning if she really earned her status and whether it's worth it to accept her being there for any longer , when in comparison there are male singers on the same level (MJ, Prince, Bowie etc) with similar or even worse mistakes GP would more easily come up with excuses or give them room to breathe. Where MJ's pedophilia accusations where found "provocative" a "PR stunt" or even simply "false" by many in the media without a need of further questioning he easily remained as the "ill genius" and his artistry was never questioned especially after when he died. Here we have Bey who was even declared as the new but female MJ in her late 20s / early 30s is now pushed to get cancelled by the smallest thing. Same with Madonna who is a lonesome legend in her 60s barely relevant anymore by the global, public eye when in comparison that would have maybe already created a wide discussion why a David Bowie in his 60s should be appreciated more by the mainstream media. Not that what Bey may or may not has done would be a mistake that should not face consequences but so many male artists do similar to worse things and yet they get through it with the opinions of people that are made more easily. Because it's harder for partriarchial society to let go of a male David Bowie than a Madonna. Gaga would have already been a new Bowie if she were male and did the same what she has done so far selling out stadiums months ahead of the start of the tour. Just saying. Misogyny isn't just bare hate against women where racism isn't just bare hate against BPOC. I just wanted to say this that people here are more aware that it's a systemic issue barely brought up that female entertainers are way easier to judge harsher because we live in a system that on its ground principles built up by partriarchy lets us constantly know that women are worthy of judging them. Maybe it helps you appreciate female artists more gives you help to perceive more before writing judgement.

I mean, regarding the people doing the calling out: I hope they give her the same energy they gave Lizzo over it.

I agree with most of what you said but remember the Leaving Neverland documentary from 2019 that really ignited a new debate

Gotcha, thank you. I said it before on this thread, but again, give it time. I have no clue what kind of timeline the Lizzo debacle followed, but this song just dropped less than 12 hours ago (in my timezone). Inconsistency could still be the case at the end of the day, but we don't know yet.

Lizzo's song was released on a friday and she announced the lyrics change the following monday

I'll be curious to see what happens..

It's not the "S word". It's not an ableist slur. God, I cannot with zoomer cancel culture. I have several mental disorders myself and I'm really tired of the militant virtue signaling. I don't even like Beyonce but I don't think she should get in trouble for this.

monstrosity

Nothing’s gonna happen, she has a total free pass

tho I couldn’t tell if using this word is ok or not, and I don’t know if she should be called out for this or not.
All I know is that if I were Lizzo I’d be fuming rn lol

There's an interesting discussion to be had around the idea of American artists using words like "sp*z" (which is a slur in the UK), British artists using words like "f*g" (which is a slur in the US), or even Gaga using a word like "gypsy" (which is a racial slur to some)

It's a shame hardly anyone is mature enough to have that conversation though.

Her team would have known about the backlash & I'm sure someone at her label would have been looking for words like that to flag for consideration, especially after the Lizzo situation went viral.

I think her team probably intentionally didn't change her lyrics to raise this very point. They might have viewed Lizzo changing her lyrics as a mistake.

Well, I think it was really kind of Lizzo to change the lyrics of her song and it shows just why people love her so much. But I haven't decided for myself whether or not I really think it was necessary :laughga:

That word isn't a slur in the US so when American artists are writing their songs they're not going to consider it. In the same way I assume Brits aren't scrutinizing the use of "f*g" by their artists or other people. Because why should they? It means something different there than it does here :laughga:

I guess I'm leaning towards this...if you want to listen to American artists, you're going to have to accept that they live and work in American culture and their music reflects that. If you take issue with it, voice it, but you can't paint Lizzo or Bey as ableist when they're using a word that just simply isn't a slur here any more than you can paint every smoker in the UK as a homophobe.
