Allegedly -

People are saying that Beyonce was told about this lyric specifically and allegedly wanted to keep it in so the album could have a few more “news cycles” and the plan from the start was to eventually remove it after it was called out.

allegedly!

this album/era for her is so cringe and I hope she moves on quickly.

Do you actually believe this :enigma:

the double standards…100% saw the backlash for lizzo but she’s qUeEn bEyOnCe so she doesn’t care and nor do her rabid stans and the tabloids are too scared to call her out

Well, the song has been out for less than 9 hours, so there's still plenty of time lol

Language is fluid and that word is pretty common and not used in a derogatory way in the US.

Funny how people are always saying Beyonce is local. Well, she’s appealing to her local (US) audience.

She shouldn’t have to change a word that’s used in her culture because someone across the sea is offended.

Context matters.

There are instances where something like this may need to be called out but as far as I am aware this is not considered a slur in the US by most of the population.

I am always happy to learn something new, as I think disabled people have the right to decide what is offensive or not in regards to their condition. At the same time, I think that words can be used as a metaphor without negative connotations, so I am not sure if I would personally categorize this word as a slur.

I love Lizzo, and I love Bey, and I don’t want to cancel or attack either artist for this because I’m aware that the word doesn’t have the same reception in the US… that being said, the word is definitely uncomfortable for me, and for disabled people it probably feels isolating. Let’s not act like Beyoncé is a US only artist.
Lizzo responded well to the situation and made a simple change to the song as well as apologising for any offence that she may have caused. I hope Beyoncé has a similar approach.

If you’re unfamiliar, in the UK this word is on par with the r slur

I do think the fact that the word meant a something totally different in the US vs the UK should mean something.  I don’t think it’s really fair for UK fans to have accused her of using a slur, when the UK often continues to blithely use the word “f*gs” to mean cigarettes and no one tries to cancel them over it. That word offends me a lot.

I mean I’m the US here it’s not even a slur. I’ve never heard it used as one like…ever. So I’m still confused about that lol.

Some really like to cancel women for using one offensive slur while there are multiple songs from males WAY WORSE in terms of language and nobody moves. Women have to be flawless while their male colleagues can do whatever they want.

I am not playing the slur down or try to defend using it but we have to see the context also.

Many people from my family suffer from disabilities.

To the people that think that this is not a big deal, hearing stuff like this in media really hurts.

Time. It will not wait, no matter how hard you hold on...

I'm on the side of the people calling out specific language 90% of the time, but I'm having trouble with this one. Mostly because it means something different where I live. It feels like getting bothered at someone who uses the term "fanny pack" because in the UK "fanny" means a genital region.

Idk maybe I just needed some more education on this 🤷🏽‍♀️

As other users mentioned, now it's more of a question of fairness and consistency in our treatment of celebs and holding them to account, as opposed to what's actually offensive or not

Gotcha, thank you. I said it before on this thread, but again, give it time. I have no clue what kind of timeline the Lizzo debacle followed, but this song just dropped less than 12 hours ago (in my timezone). Inconsistency could still be the case at the end of the day, but we don't know yet.

:queenga:On my way to attack latin nations for using the word negro since the word means something entirely different than where I’m from since we’re using this logic.

:huntyga: This PC culture really needs to stop being so…nvm lemme not.
