Kelis took to Instagram last night to speak out about Beyoncé sampling her 2003 song "Milkshake” on “Energy,” the fifth song on the singer’s hotly anticipated album Renaissance.

In a reply to a post from fan account @kelistrends on Instagram, Kelis used her cooking account @bountyandfull to address the sample.
"My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding," Kelis wrote.
I heard about this the same way everyone else did,” the singer said. “Nothing is ever as it seems, some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.” In a response to a fan who said the two should collaborate, she said, “it’s not a collab it’s theft.”

After another person suggested Beyoncé's move showed she admired Kelis, the hitmaker was quick to shut that observation down.
"I always felt like Beyoncé really admires Kelis," the fan wrote, to which Kelis responded, "admire is not the word."

Kelis has spoken out previously about not being properly compensated for her early work with the Neptunes.
“I thought it was a beautiful and pure, creative safe space, but it ended up not being that at all,” she said in an interview with The Guardian in 2020.
“I was told we were going to split the whole thing 33/33/33, which we didn’t do,” she also said at the time, adding that she was “blatantly lied to and tricked” by “the Neptunes and their management and their lawyers and all that stuff.”

She said that she does not make any money off her first 2 albums, which were produced by the Neptunes. She also had no songwriting credits on the albums.

If Kelis didn't know she was being sampled until Bey announced the credits then that's quiet bad of her own label. I'd be mad too but probs not at Beyonce.

Kelis has any credit on that song? If not, they didn't have the right to contact her. Ok it's a polite thing to do, but we all know how Beyoncé Is and how She feels about herself

I'd be careful with my words, she might soon find herself in the same place as SIA

This is sad, hoping it's just a miscommunication/failure to pass along info because I love them both. Kelis is iconic tbh

monstrosity

If I were there biggest artist on the planet and I wanted to sample someone I’ll let them know lol, even if I wasn’t legally bound to do so? How is it hard to understand that it’s literally the bare minimum?

Kelis is not a credited writer or producer, so no, Beyonce didn't owe her anything. And I'm not claiming Bey doesn't have a history with this sort of thing, but she's absolutely in the clear this time and people are dragging her for no reason.

Beyonce steals from everyone, very little about her work is original and she gets away with it because of her cult status… quite disgusting tbh.

I’ve heard about half the album and I HATE to say it’s not very good (in my opinion, obviously), which is disappointing cause a Beyoncé dance album in theory sounds perfect! But the songs are pretty lacklustre.

it’ll be interesting to see the reviews
