@Beyoncé’s single Break My Soul, released last month, was hailed as “awe-inspiring”, described as a “post-pandemic anthem” and generally greeted as if it was a radical Donna Summers’ floor-filler from 1979 – even though it was more like a disposable jingle played during an ITV2 advert for Love Island."

Unpopular opinion but since musical taste is subjective I think music critics are not necessary at all

I low-key have always said this. "Music Quality" is so arbitrary so even judge awards like Grammys are Ultimately still just people's opinions

They don't really matter. It's a prestige that's purely a social construct

Break my soul was not it for me either but I still have major hope that album is going to be great.

I’ll end my mini rant on this iconic line,

“**** the New York post” -LDR

I think it’s brilliant marketing to release a subpar lead single and then follow it with an album that absolutely destroys. Taylor did this with Reputation and Lover to great effect. Hoping Bey does the same 🙏

Like others said, I don't get the point of critics in general. It's not what's going to make me want to listen to an album, watch a movie etc. I usually trust general opinion - rather than one single critic, the collective opinion. An average of ratings is a good start (of course you have to be selective and not go to one of these websites where people give great ratings to bad music/movies etc). If it gets really bad ratings, I know it's bad, and if it gets good ratings, I know that at least I'll be able to appreciate the work behind it even if I don't like it.
