I think this narrative needs to stop. The earth is gonna fine. It survived ice ages and meteorites, however WE are not gonna be fine. Nature adapts, it always does, we need to reshift the way we fight for this issue, not only because it’s not true ( the way we do it ), but also because people are selfish. Tell them that the problem is affecting them, not earth, and maybe they’ll care more.

It is affecting the Earth though :bear:

Mass plankton die outs due to our industrial society has the potential to literally change the atmosphere as they produce the vast majority of the oxygen we breathe. The last time that happened was at the dawn of photosynthesis and the great oxygenation event...which killed like 96% of life on the planet :deadbanana:

While the circumstances are very different and I don't think we could feasibly sterilize the Earth, we are definitely capable of causing a total ecosystem collapse and destroying nearly every food chain from the bottom up.

So our society will collapse for sure but we'd take so much life with us and that shouldn't be downplayed :bradley:

I didn’t say that it’s not affecting the earth, I said life adapts, which is true, it always has throughout history. Of course it’s not just us that’s going to go down with it but an entire system because everything is linked together, I was just point out how people are selfish and bringing into the conversation the fact that we are the ones truly dying and not earth which will sustain life in new ways in the future maybe will make people be more interested in doing something because unfortunately we only care about ourselves.

I don’t see what’s so ignorant and nonsense, did you even read what I said? The fact that we are the ones being affected is true and that our own kind is the one at most risk ( alongside and entire chain of other forms of life as everything is connected in some way ) is true. Earth adapting is also true, that’s what nature does, it always finds a way to balance itself out again, you speak like we are about to erradicate ALL life on the face of the earth which is not true. Life will keep on existing and reappearing in new forms in the future as so did we after other major events happened that threatened life’s existance. Nature doesn’t take this personal, WE SHOULD, if we want humanity to keep on being a thing. I didn’t say we shouldn’t do anything about it or that climate change is not true, I simply said that the way we go about it should include in the discourse the fact that we are the ones about to go extinct and not that earth is full on dying as some claim, maybe that will make people be more interested in doing something because that’s how humans work, we only care about ourselves, we should use it to our advantage in this comversation.

Oh, well, yeah you have a point there. I mean, it's already causing political instability, food and water shortages, droughts, super heat waves, super blizzards, all f*ck us over :rip:

they tell us to recycle, use paper/metal straws, go vegan, walk/cycle instead of drive

they're the ones who can comfortably live to be green! for a lot us, the greener option is more expensive and that can matter a lot! :grr:

rant over

But these are simple things we should do. And for many people living in developed western countries are not hard to do. I don't get this argument

i agree we should do them but it's the way corporations and celebs preach at us as if they're not jetting around or making their own cut backs, you know?

like, why be so preachy just to be just as guilty, if not sometimes more?

So there are really people who have nothing better to do than stalk the private jets of celebrities, and even calculate the quantities of co2 released? seriously?

Yeah, believe it or not, it is actually a real thing to track co2 emissions, you know, on the account of human race likely being doomed because of it and all :yennefer:

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

Kylie and Drake are well known and can be easily scrutinized, right fully so, but there are a lot of "unknown" wealthy people that we dont know exist (CEOs, stakeholders in corporations, etc) and these people have the audacity to tell us peasents to be concious of the environment. Its gross.

Surely you understand that when people say that they refer to a human-inhabitable/inhabited Earth

No they don’t. Shift the conversation or put the focus on how it’s affecting their personal lives and you’ll see a sudden empathy to this entire situation
