FfFfFfFF 58,120
The European Commission has issued new guidelines, saying sanctions do not apply to rail transit via Lithuania to Russia's Kaliningrad. In the document published on Wednesday, the Commission said rail transit can only be used to satisfy the needs of essential goods in Kaliningrad. Benji 20,113
Massively disappointing. Appeasing Russia in hopes they’ll turn the gas back on is going to do nothing but strengthen Putin and extend this war. Not a moment the history books will look back on as a good move. But also their poor decisions were taken way earlier. Taking those decisions now is not as easy as typing in a text on ggd. Forget the EU economy, but no gas would be very bad for the citizens. That’s why you ration what you have/can get, buy extra from the open market all whilst undoing your reliance on Russian gas. They’re funding a war because they’re refusing to be frank with their populations that sacrifices will have to be made. The EU has now shown their hand, if you want us to roll over; turn off the gas and we’ll do what you want.

This is a disgusting move I think its worth noting the allowing of shipment is only for "essential" goods not just anything Im not one for punishing and making everyday citizens suffer out of their basic needs especially if that insignificant region is not going to significantly affect Russias overall economic strength So in my opinion this is not as disgusting as yall are making it to be

First, every concession is sold back in Russia as a victory for Putin. This spurs him, his government and his supporters on. Second, civil unrest is a useful tool in war. If your population turn on you then you’re in for trouble. Third, this isn’t about being nice, you can’t be nice to a country that is looking to expand its borders and starve the developing world. Finally, China. It is watching every move in this war as it plans to take Taiwan. Weakness shown now is what China will exploit next.

What happened now us that EU backed down and now allows Russia send stuff by rail. The Kaliningrad sanctions weren't making people starve, instead were putting pressure on Russia logistically. Russia can still send essential and non-essential goods via the Baltic Sea.

I'm saying that taking those decisions is not easy. For example, Germany had a completely different government 2008. Merkel promissed that Germany is going to rely less on Russian gas, while building Nord Stream 2. Really stupid. Now the government has changed and they are trying to not let citizens suffer from poor decisions that were taken years before. We are already having way more expenses thanks to the inflation and people are losing jobs. How are those people going to make sacrifices when they are already struggeling? Food and medicine were already exempt. However construction goods were banned, a move aimed at hurting Kaliningrad economy. That is not really "essential". The entire western world, the USA, UK, EU and beyond are all struggling right now. The difference is, the UK has been honest about the struggles, put forward plans for rationing/blackouts to protect industry and keep demand low whilst we create infrastructure for other energy sources. What makes Germans so special that they get to cover Putin’s palms with silver for his Ukrainian blood gas? It’s selfish.
