FfFfFfFF 58,358 Posted July 3, 2022 Share Posted July 3, 2022 After Ukraine's confirmed retreat from the city Lysychansk and reports of Russians planting a Soviet flag in Biholorivka village, the Russians got officially in control of the entire Luhansk oblast. Meaning, the so-called Luhansk People's Republic that Putin recognized as independent prior to the war now controls all of its planned territory. After 4 months of very intense fighting, the Russians managed to take two thirds of Luhansk, however as of now they only occupy 55% of Donetsk. The takeover of Donetsk is the next natural step for Russia in this moment. Ukraine sadly lost the battle for Luhansk after heavy and lenghty fighting and the battle for Donetsk will probably another bloodbath. Russia also controls 93% of Kherson province. Provinces or oblasts are Ukraine's top level administrative divisions, similar to US' states - in other words this is like Russia occupying the whole of Alaska or Mexico taking over all of California. What will happen now is that the Russians will slowly go on the offensive in Donetsk and take every town and village, little by little- according to their strategy after the retreat from Kyiv. This region is traditionally more pro-Russian than average, so another part why Russia had more success here but failed in Kyiv could in part be explained by this. A big problem seems to be that Russia just has so many more troops compared to Ukraine and is willing to keep sending their soldiers to die in the meat grinder as long as they can gain more territory.
