i find it interesting that people are quick not to call this a slur, when they are most likely not developmentally disabled in some way themselves šŸ¤” how can you comment on the nature of the word, when it’s never been used against you in that way? curiousĀ

It's because it was quite a commonly used word back in the day in which people who have immersed themselves to those kinds of environment see the usage of such word as normal and only used as an insult, not associating it to its dated definition which is now what we call as intellectual disability. I see the word quite a lot in stories a few years ago, especially those that caters to mid to late teenagers. Someone whose English might not be their native language might possibly not know those, for example. Now I'm not saying that the use of such word isn't offensive, but some people are quick to jump on someone who have used it in some way as part of their informal conservation, and instead of educating them, they would rather hate on them for saying the word. Some people might digress that the usage is not offensive just because in their own isolated context, it really isn't. That's why a context as to why and how the word brought about the current debate on its usage is a great help in spreading awareness instead of inconclusive hate.

Medically it's an outdated term so most of the way it's used now is in a derogatory way at the expense of people with intellectual disabilities.Ā

Maybe it varies between different cultures but I’ve always referred to it as ā€œthe r slurā€ or ā€œthe r wordā€ and so has everyone around me for pretty much my entire life. I’ve even seen it censored recently on TV shows that used it back in the day. Itā€˜s considered much more derogatory than it was years ago.

It's surely a strong word. I dont like this culture of erasing history, but i really dont like. And saying r word, just seems like the kind of things we would say when we were 6.. Every culture is it's own, but it's part of the dictionary, it exists and writting it out or saying it out loud wont change a damn thing.Ā

Saying it to someone, usually it's a quick way to offend someone, and a very stupid one. I get it more than ever. In my culture we use the synonimous for disabled like in every other circunstance...it's def not okay. But censoring it.. that's not it, in my view
