Oh holy **** I really hope this isn't true, what an awful idea.

It really won't help Gaga to be part of this and the fanbase will ****ing eat her alive for thinking maybe her casting had something to do with the vision to change it to a musical.

Was hoping it would just be a raw, disturbing account of the characters' mental health issues.

They'll blame her, because they're morons. I already thought this was a bad idea, but now it's even worse....yikes. Like not to be dramatic, but this is a "ruins her chances of ever getting an Oscar in the near future" type of move imo.

Like if this wasn't a sequel, I'd actually be here for a super campy take on Harley and the Joker as a musical. But this seems wild-and not in a good way-as a sequel to Phillip's Joker. Let's hope Bobby sees the backlash on twitter-not just fans, but actual critics clowning on this project.

A MUSICAL!?!?! so excited! I want Gaga to distance herself from too many music based roles but she just did House of Gucci with no music so another music based movie can work again!

Gaga has been very picky with her roles and if this was any other artist I would panic right now. I feel like she would read the script before agreeing to any role and if she does end up being in this movie, it will showcase one of her talents.

HoG was a mess but then Gaga was the best thing about that movie and even if the director sucked at the pacing, she didnt suck as an actress and everyone respects her for her part in that movie.

I have not seen the first Joker cause I thought it was too depressing but I know she would do well in a stylized dramedy for it. I dont know how the musical will kick in but it cant be as bad as CATS.

I am definitely expecting a Joker and Harley shared delusion about living inside a Hollywood musical when really they are doctor/patient.

Yes, I think the whole musical part will be 100% in their heads. I can see it being born out of their romance. And that can work, and be very dark too, contrasting their delusion sceenes with what will most likely be a very depressing/gritty reality.

You're not alone, it was a huge success which is probably why Gaga is drawn to the sequel. I don't mind new interpretations but I found the Arthur character to be TOO different. It was SO far removed from the real Joker that I was left thinking what was the point? Why even call it Joker if it's 99% a new character wearing a Joker-ish outfit? It reminds me of Halle Berry's Catwoman in that way. Changing THAT much almost feels disrespectful.

I understand that point of view and I think it's definitley valid. I'm not saying you're wrong in any capacity, but I just think we have two different opinions on how we viewed the end product.

I think a big reason why I'm okay with them changing Joker so much is because the end product ended up being really, really good (imo). Had I thought the Joker movie was complete dogshit, I probably would've been singing a different tune.

Musicals are amazing….they can take such a dark approach with the music, and experiment with different styles of vocalisation to potentially symbolise the mental decline of the main characters, or even to create a spooky atmosphere. This could either go amazingly well, or horribly wrong. And, we should always appreciate potentially a new LG album!

Not y’all doubting Gaga and the director after the first movie that was a masterpiece. I can completely see how a musical would bring the mental illness theme even further. It will be absolutely magical and I can’t ****ing wait for this. Wow.

The first movie was stylistically very inspired by 70's Scorsese films, and there was concept musicals in the 70's that incorporated music into stories that were very dark but not in a camp way.

Of course I can't say for sure, but I think calling it a "musical" is probably giving people the wrong idea of what it will be. They may be incorporating musical elements into the film to portray the Joker and Harley's mental state in a surreal way.

The idea of a musical sounds jarring compared to the first film, but if it's done in the right way it could be extremely innovative and well received.

And while the first film was definitely not a musical, there were elements where music played an important role. Arguably one of the most iconic scenes was the staircase dancing scene

Yeah, I think that if the musicals are used in a really interesting, engaging, and intelligent way, I think it could be brilliant. If they use the musicals to express some sort of mental state of Joker and Harley, I think it could be really interesting. But again, I think they have to be selective about how they turn this movie into a "musical."

As for the stairs scene specifically, I would disagree with you a little in trying to use that as an example to push forward the musical argument. It's a great scene, I love it, and sure it uses music, but I don't think it even remotely touches upon how Joker could be used as a musical. I just see it was part of the score.

I was just using the staircase scene as an example of how scenes revolving around music could be used, in a non typical "musical" kind of way, and how music is used to further highlight the Joker's descent into madness. Some of these reports calling it a "musical" may be jumping the gun as I doubt there's going to be any jazz hands and big chorus numbers, but rather just incorporating musical elements into the story that probably exist as dream sequences of some kind. I can see musical scenes being used just to highlight the film's darkness, almost like how Black Mirror have done on occasion.
