I was born, raised, and still live in the deep south of the US and I can tell you with complete assurance that every single person I know who is a church-going Christian (the vast majority of my family and relatives plus co-workers) would say that this is extreme without ever outright disagreeing with it. Christians in America (or at least the South) focus on what they believe the bible says you shouldn't do or be instead of what you should do which is love everyone with judgment. They like to have an us vs them mentality and constantly place themselves in the position of being victimized because they are upholding God's word.

I guess the degree of indifference or disagreement/disapproval varies by regions.

 

The religious ppl I know including my family included do not agree with practicing homosexuality for sure but then they'd still consider murder a far worse sin than homosexuality so I know for a fact they wouldn't just call this extremist, they'd also very strongly disagree with a murder of anyone including gays

 

Then again, my family is JW which is slightly different in some ways than most Christian religions

 

Homosexuality in their community is not considered worse than regular heterosexual sex between a non married couple, either way it's "immorality". But it's so common in everyday society they aren't that phased by what other people do although they still won't accept it within their own group if you want to be part of it

 

But I believe the vast majority of religious people in Canada regardless of religion still wouldn't support "killing" gays. I'm sure a few would tho

I assume Austin is more progressive than most of Texas but still conservative leaning?

I couldn't tell you honestly  but its pretty rare there, in fact it has just about the lowest LGBT hate crime rate too, it's one of the few places where gay couples can be comfortable just about anywhere in the city with PDA.

So many “god-fearing” individuals need constantly get confused with what their church organisations say, rather than what the Bible actually says.

The Catholic Catechism does not represent truly what the Bible says, nor does the Southern Baptist’s’ terms or whatever those key “rules” are. 

In reality, the Bible is so ambiguous on homosexuality; it’s not an overarching theme within Christian scripture, and when condemned, in books such as Leviticus, “Man shall not lay with a man as he would with a woman”, they’re not actually relevant to Christians today, as this book was practically a code-of-conduct for Jewish priests in a province of Palestine. And sure, I don’t think preachers who use this quote ever bring up how the book condemns eating pork, or wearing mixed fabric, or bringing your firstborn son to church within the first 33 days after his birth….

These “preachers” cannot be true Christians, as they don’t actually care about what the Bible says, and they clearly have gave no individual, critical thought and understanding to the teachings of Christ in order to have a strong relationship with God.
