The family of the author whose article inspired the 1986 Tom Cruise movie "Top Gun" on Monday sued Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement over this year's blockbuster sequel "Top Gun: Maverick."

According to a complaint filed in Los Angeles federal courtby Shosh Yonay and Yuval Yonay, who are respectively Ehud's widow and son, the Paramount Global unit failed to reacquire the rights to Ehud Yonay's 1983 article "Top Guns" from the family before releasing the "derivative" sequel.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, including profits from "Top Gun: Maverick," and to block distribution of the movie or further sequels.

Paramount said in a statement: "These claims are without merit, and we will defend ourselves vigorously."

Lion King was based on Hamlet & the sequels were based on creating terrible sequels but you don't see Bill Shakes crawling out of his grave to get a quick buck out of Simba's Pride.

Opportunistic & morally inept.

if the original was based on the article, and the sequel is not a reworking of the original, but a sequel, I don't see how it's directly connected to the source material.

Shakespeare's work is public domain so your example is not good here.

Universal had the rights for the article and the rights expired, so they had to re-purchase them again if they wanted to created the sequel that heavily takes elements from the first movie, like the friendship of the pilots, which was the first inspiration of the movie based on the article.

And Hamlet is a lift of an Icelandic saga, the story of Amleth - also the basis of The Northman :glamourpuss:

Miss Shakes is off to court I fear :billie:
