The Russian Foreign Ministry has commented on arrest and charging of the former Russophile Moldavian president, Igor Dodon, launching accusations against the current government in Chisinau.

On May 24, searches were carried out in the house of the former president, honorary president of the Socialist Party (PSRM) Igor Dodon, he was suspected of passive corruption, illicit enrichment, high treason and financing of the political party by a criminal organization and was placed under house arrest for 30 days.

Maria Zaharova, the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that although Dodon's case is "an internal matter of the Republic of Moldova ", he " arouses interest " in Moscow as well. ''I read the news about the accusations brought against Dodon regarding treason for the benefit of our country and I wonder in a few years who in Moldova will be accused of treason, for example, for the benefit of the USA? Were such options taken into account?",  the Russian official insinuated during a briefing.
