Does it really matter if it's Turkey or Türkiye? They are just trying to disctract people from daily events that's happening in Turkey/Türkiye 🤡

I don't have those on my keyboard, so I'll keep using Turkey :vegas:

It would be polite to spell Turkiye I guess

Cool!

Also, I'm pretty sure India will also have its name change in the next 2-5 years. Will rename to Bharat.

Is it true and why?

Countries should decide themselves what they call themselves.

I have always found weird how the names have many variations in each language. Germany in portuguese for example is “Alemanha”. As for Turkey, we translate it to “Turquia” which does not mean turkey at all

Google tells me India is called Bharat in some of the country's languages. Its even named in the country's Constitution

Right.

The term India or even Hindustan is given by foreigners only. And politicians here wanna change that.

From wiki: "This [Indus] river was known to the ancient Indians in Sanskrit as Sindhu and the Persians as Hindu which was regarded by both of them as "the border river". From the Persian Achaemenid Empire, the name passed to the Greeks as Indós (Ἰνδός). It was adopted by the Romans as Indus. The name India is derived from Indus."

People living on the other side of Sindh were called Hindu and the place Hindustan (the place where Hindu lives). The term India caught up during the colonisation by the European powers.

Now the country is in the process of decolonisation/reclamation, except the process is being lead by the ruling ethno-nationalist party, kinda like Republican party. While the intention is good, the way things are happening in the country is not good. The secular and socialist character of the country is being dismantled. Kinda like what's happening in Turkey.

I might use the new name when talking about that country in English (so, rarely ever :huntyga: ). But I won't be bothered to also use it when talking/writing in German (we simply call it Türkei and it stays that way :gayhat:).

Ew, David!

It's sad that they have to change their name because of the animal that was named AFTER them, and it's not the animal that needs to have its English name changed

Not yall refusing to call them as they want :triggered: no matter how much we disagree with Erdogan or despite him, it’s not the rest of the world that decided if we validate their request or turn them away.

If we all started to say Kyiv instead of Kiev out of respect for Ukrainians, their history and culture, I don’t see why its an issue to call them Türkiye for similar reasons, there is no right or bad time to claim some change anyway, a country can do multiple things at the same time, let Turkish people decide.
