The United Kingdom (UK) and its allies are reportedly discussing supplying arms to Moldova to help it guard against an imminent Russian threat in the separatist Transnistria region.

In an interview with The Telegraph, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss asserted, “I would want to see Moldova equipped to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) standard. This is a discussion we’re having with our allies.” When asked whether this was because of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expansionist policy, she stated, “Putin has been absolutely clear about his ambitions to create a greater Russia – and just because his attempts to take Kyiv weren’t successful it doesn’t mean he’s abandoned those ambitions.”

Reminder that Moldova can instantly get NATO protection if it announces it's desire to merge with Romania (already NATO member)- this is unprecedent, but in case of emergency this is all within the realm of possibilities.

Is that happened, what would happen in Transnistria? As if they are part of NATO surely Russia would be forced to withdraw

Transnistria will most likely be left out of the equation as a concession to Russia or left with an ambiguous status to avoid further escalation.

The idea that an unified Romania would still include it is unlikely, but the scenario of Moldova asking to merge with Romania implies Moldova would be in an even more vulnerable position that it is now. That would mean Russia would need head to Odesa and by the time Odesa falls, Transnistria will hypotetically be involved in the war. So, by the time Moldova asks to join Romania, the Russian troops might already be gone because of Ukraine.
