It was directed by Brett Morgen and it's not a biopic; it will feature never-before-seen footage, performances, music and also Bowie’s own narration. While making the film Morgen received unfiltered access to Bowie’s personal libraries, including master recordings, and it's shaped by "thousands of hours of rare performance footage of the musician and more than 500 assets from his archive". It was also reported that Tony Visconti, Bowie’s longtime producer, served as the film’s music producer. The film is set to premiere today at Cannes, with a theatrical release in September and is expected to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in spring 2023.
