The reporting has been a little misleading.  It’s worth remembering that there’s far less stigma in the (male) gay community with getting tested for diseases and that explains why gay men have so far been the ones mostly being diagnosed.  Both of these events have various sex parties tied to them so many attendants would naturally go for a test after they return.

Ummm these aren’t cold symptoms that folks can choose to ignore. It’s many lesions/blisters all over the body that usually start on the FACE. U get this, you’re most definitely getting tested, gay straight or whatever.

the first case of covid in my country was a guy who attended a football match in Italy with his girlfriend. In several forums I pointed out that the sexual orientation wasn't mentioned, and it would have been mentioned had it been a gay guy attending Pride with his boyfriend.

You gays are ridiculous. Just like the black people complaining about using photos of monkeypox on black skin in the media.

The disease is being found in predominantly men who have had sex with other men outside of Africa. The disease is mainly found in Africa and is well documented under west-Africans. These are all facts.

There’s a presumptive case in my county. Wrap it up, fruit cakes.

Entering my virgin era.

So many straight men will literally be on their death bed before even thinking about speaking with their doctor :ladyhaha: Let’s not forget how many straight people silently died of HIV because they assumed it was a gay virus they didn’t need to worry about it or were ashamed to have it.  You’re working on the assumption that people will do the right thing… just after we had a global pandemic where people would refuse to wear a mask or isolate if they were carrying a virus that killed millions of people across the globe.

Propogating the diminished importance of the fact that it is currently being spread among men having sex with each other, is not really helping any cause.

Also, your statement about str8 people not getting medical attention for HIV is really disingenuous. Africa has suffered the most under that virus... And they don't even really tolerate other sexualities.

Maybe everyone, including people like you that think they have good intentions, should stop judging what is happening, and seriosuly start considering what is happening.

We are experiencing an increase in zoonotic diseases. This has happened previously in history when we started to practice agriculture and live in close proximity to animals. Obviously now it is happening more frequently because of our daily encroachment of other animals' habitat and our close proximities to each other.

So... In simple terms... The problem is climate change. Can we please stop fuxxing propagating identity politics as something of worth.

It isn’t identity politics.  There’s a huge amount of unrecorded deaths from AIDS in the 80’s where straight people in the west simply didn’t seek treatment or their family fought to have their death record not refer to HIV.  We don’t want a repeat of people assuming this is going to be a “gay” virus again because then straight people don’t come forward for treatment.

I know what we don't want. I agree with you.

But, let us be honest with each other. Do you really care about the people who don't go to the hospital when they are sick with something like pox? Are they really worth worrying about in 2022?

My point is that your concern about the reporting on the disease is completely misplaced. It really doesn't matter.

We should be worrying about why this is happening.

Arguing about who it is happening to, how it is reported and how that will affect current sentiments of identity politics is of no use.

Also, let us not pretend that the gay community has actually took the history of HIV infections seriously. We still advertise whether we take precaution or not and when we did it. There is bug-chasing fetishes glorifying the spread of a disease. The protests by gays have mostly been towards anti-stigmatisation, not really towards practices that don't spread diseases. They literally organised hookup-parties at meetings to discuss the HIV pandemic.

Playing the identity politics/discrimination card will only backfire. It is of no practicable use. Let us not mix it with actual problems.

The United Nations AIDS Agency has already expressed concern of reports about monkey pox using homophobic and/or racist stereotypes.  It’s very much on the gay community’s radar that the reporting has similarities to the aids crises.

I’m not sure why you’re bringing up bug chasers who probably represent less than 1% of the community?  Should we be more cautious when there’s a dangerous bug around?  Of course, but this angle you’re taking is riddled with outdated views on sexuality and Pearl clutching.

I’m also not sure why you’re using “identity politics” the way you are.  Outlining that reports blaming minorities for the spread of disease is bad is not identity politics.  It puts everyone at danger; the people in those minorities from increased hostility and complacency from members of the public that aren’t a part of that minority.

I don't believe for something like this it would be the norm. I mean a few guys might choose to do their best to hide it and stay indoors but I don't see that being the Majority of the cases

We're not talking about herpes or a passing cold sore that's easy to hide or usually has mild symptoms. We're talking about a major ailment that usually has pretty major or severe symptoms. Most ppl will seek out medical attention

Maybe u don't want to acknowledge that in the gay community this illness has been disproportionately predominant but all the evidence so far points in that direction

U'd need like 80% to 90% of straight men to be hiding this condition in order for the argument that it's only disproportionate on gay men in statistics "because straights aren't getting tested" to hold up. That's just too high a number for anyone to believe or take seriously.

It's spreading more among gay men, periodt.

Now the focus should be on rebuting any stigma this may cause as ppl will look at the community a certain way even tho on the grand scheme of things these are still very small and insignificant numbers and is only getting this much attention cuz of media and potential (but unlikely) major outbreak

I disagree with you that the criticism of reporting on the disease is not based on identity politics.

It should not be a problem to report that a disease is being spread between X's and not being observed in Y's. Making a big deal out of that fact is what identity politics is all about - Pointing out facts, and then using that to form an opinion that fits a specific ideology. Being troubled about those opinions also means you are engaging in a debate of identity politics.

But I think, for the most part, we are on the same page. We are, in the end, looking out for each other.

People keep saying it’s not “easy to hide” but the issue is that there isn’t lesions on the face/body for upto two weeks into having the illness.  It’s not like people are knowingly approaching other people with lesions on their face and getting themselves exposed.  Prior to lesions, someone with the illness may have a fever but most would continue with their day after taking paracetamol.

This isn’t just a disease you get from sex.  A huge overlooked aspect of the virus is it’s ability to spread through saliva.  If someone who had the virus coughed into their hands, touched a door knob that you then touch then the virus can enter your body through your eyes, mouth, nose etc.

You also need to add that sexual transmission is not actually common in Africa, where the virus has been present. It has only been observed in close-knit rural communities where the virus broke out.

So, there is a possibility that this a variant that may be more easily spread through sexual acts. We do not know yet. But atm, sexual intercourse with an infected individual seems to be a significant risk factor.
