The church – located northeast of Jabalia and discovered by chance during road construction work – was reportedly under restoration for three years, a project that was carried out by the French organization Premiere Urgence Internationale and the British Council at a cost of almost $250,000. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the church covers 800 square meters and contains texts that date back as far as 444 AD., during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II. The church was opened at an official event organized by Gaza’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in the presence of both Islamic and Christian representatives. Gaza's Tourism Ministry said the church's original walls were adorned with religious texts written in ancient Greek, dating from the era of Emperor Theodosius II, who ruled Byzantium from the year 408 to 450. Visitors can now see them while walking through newly-built, elevated wooden walkways. Only around 1,000 Christians remain in the coastal enclave today, according to local church officials, compared to 7,000 before 2007. The number was higher before 2007, but like the other Gaza residents, Christians emigrated to look for better living conditions after the start of the strict Israeli siege imposed on the enclave. Gaza is in Palestine though. palma 8,909 Posted May 17, 2022 Share Posted May 17, 2022 Great news! Gaza used to be a bustling metropolis back in the Late Antiquity. Any sort of archaeological activity must be incredibly hard given the situation there - those people should get an award for saving the cultural heritage of Palestine.
