Which is true. How can he have no understanding when he has seen firsthand what the lgbtq community go through? This has always been my own personal opinion, as long as you (not you) are siding with the oppressed and have an understanding of what they go through, you get a “pass” to make jokes about it. I’ll let white comedians pass on certain jokes due to their understanding of the culture. Because to craft a joke that isn’t just straight up crude/racist takes an understanding of the culture. Which to me personally Dave Chappelle has. But again we’ll agree to disagree. What has he firsthand seen the LGBT+ community go through? What understanding do you think Dave Chappelle has about the LGBT+ community that he empathizes with and gives him his "pass?" That he was friends with a trans person? He uses her as a token and even implies that she killed herself because of the harassment from other queer people. That he is a member of an oppressed minority as well? There are plenty of parallels between marginalized groups, and he draws from none of them. Instead, he spends the entire special calling out the differences. The "switch" is just a metaphor for the differences in how the two groups are oppressed. Dave is framing it to be a competition, and that the LGBT are less oppressed because they can "turn it off when its convenient." It's not like you can tell a person is gay just by appearance...unless they're gender nonconforming. Which, to Dave, is an obvious indicator of gay people. And he can clock trans people easily, if his stand-up is anything to go by. Which is nothing to say that going back in the closet being a traumatic experience to many LGBT+ people, unique to them no less. It's not that there isn't a difference in types of discrimination or severity, it's that he chooses to justify making fun of one group because he doesn't think they haven't as bad as the group he is a part of. That he isn't punching down, because he's actually punching up. That's why people call him transphobic. And I'll say again, he was also homophobic too. He demonstrates no empathy for queer people in the special, only annoyance. The jokes weren't crafted in understanding, only ignorance and stereotypes, and that's why people found it offensive. We all saw how up in flames white gay twitter with the BLM movement Twitter is always called a cesspool for a reason... I believe you don't want or deserve to be represented by gay Twitter if you're gay, by black Twitter if you're black etc. It's the place where people with vile views express dare to say it cause they know it's the less monitored social... And cause nearly nobody adds his grandma on Twitter like you do on Facebook so there's really no social risk to expose yourself either. It's a creep magnet place imo.
