Honestly this is why I was so, so angry that some people refused to vote for Clinton when it came to Clinton or Trump or voted Green even if they lived in a non Blue state. The Supreme Court was a serious issue-especially because of Ruth's age-and people kept ignoring it. T

I'm sick of this talking point being trotted out every time something horrible happens in America.  It makes no sense and it's never made any sense.

The people who would've normally voted for a Democrat and refused to vote for Clinton made up an infinitesimally small portion of the population. Way more Clinton voters voted for McCain in 2008 than Sanders voters voted for Trump, etc.

If you want to blame someone, blame the Democratic Party for refusing to codify Roe when Obama was president and had a super-majority in Congress. Blame Ginsburg for refusing to retire under Obama so that he could appoint her successor. Blame the people who are actually doing this right now. Blame Clinton for running an abysmal campaign and losing to a reality TV show host. Blame the Republican Party for working to overturn a ruling that is and has always been popular. Blaming people on the left who didn't vote for Hilary Clinton 6 years ago and who in no way shape or form lost her the election is completely ridiculous.

Right now? Pressure the judges to change their mind. This is just a draft decision and hasn't been made official  yet. If all hell breaks loose now, then maybe they'll change their minds.

If not, and Roe is overturned, then...I'm not sure really. Sad how 5 people can take millions' body autonomy away. Especially when four of those five people were appointed to the Supreme Court by presidents who lost the popular vote.

This can definitely be used to galvanize independent and Democratic voters though. Overturning Roe doesn't make abortion illegal but it does allow states to make it illegal. If there's a real push in swing states and Democrats are elected, they can protect abortion rights on a state level until Roe is reinstated (and it will be some day, no doubt). But for the women who live in solidly red states, the outlook is kinda bleak.

It's terrifying. And the democrats honestly don't seem like they have the fight in them. Feels surreal to have basically seen this coming and yet I am still kinda stunned and sick that this is 2022

Genuine question from a non-American... what can the Dems realistically do about this?

Not much. Honestly, our system of government is pretty f*cked (it's a mix of French and British legal systems) and it's very easy to block laws, etc....especially because our country is wildly polarized. The only way to get a lot of real change done is a) have a majority in the senate/congress (and even then, it doesn't mean every party member will vote with their party) or b) try and appoint liberal leaning judges to the courts.

The big issue is every single state gets 2 senator, so the senate has unfair representation as there are like 300-400k people living in Montana and 40 million live in California. That's due to f*cked up, old laws involving slavery.

I know people don't want to hear this, but realistically -- because Manchin / Sinema / etc. cannot be relied upon -- we need a few more democrats in Congress before they can do much. But, if we can get that -- there's a lot.

This court can be neutered, and it should be. The easiest (but perhaps most controversial) thing is to expand it, which can be done by a simple act of Congress, and we can then appoint several new justices to re-balance it. Beyond that, justices can be impeached (but it's much more difficult, comparable to a Presidential impeachment), and I can make a sincere case for the impeachment of most of the conservatives.

they can pass a law through congress to make it a federal law (meaning a law all states have to abide by). but not sure what kinds of complications that would entail :ohwell: for example, idk if a state can sue the federal government over it, then having the case come up to the supreme court again and then they strike that down making the federal government from that point on powerless on the issue (maybe? ).

Actually yeah, they could :lolly:

I think there's already frame work for a "Women's Health Protection Act" or something like that. I haven't looked too deeply into it but I guess now's the time to. There was also a prior case where an FDA approved "abortion pill" was being regulated (access to it was restricted) by a red state and the federal government was able to step in and say "no, this drug is approved, it must be allowed". Federal law supersedes state law.

They could very well ensure access to safe and legal abortion at the federal level. Biden himself could even tie a neat little bow on it as he's pushed for a lot of women's rights and safety issues like the "violence against women act" and joining Gaga in 2015 for the "It's On Us" campaign to end campus sexual assault.

That all comes with the threat of repealing it when/if the Republicans take over but, again, it's a galvanizing issue and Democrats need to get the hell up and Pokemon Go to the polls. Our rights literally depend on it now.

No. I do blame Ginsburg most of all and the Republicans, but I also blame voters. It was 30-40k people that made the difference, AND leftists begged them to vote for Hillary...including Bernie because Bernie is a good man who knew how important the court was for our future. Also, abortion rights had vastly less support in '09-it never would have never been codified. There were Blue Dogs Dems back then, which make Joe Manchin look like a liberal in comparison.

Look at the French. They understood how Le Pen was a threat and came together. The US left often lacks that cohesiveness and ability to recognize reality, and I consider myself a soft leftist who was no fan of Clinton.

Elections have consequences. Trump’s appointees doing exactly what they were installed for.

We can also blame RBG for putting her pride and ego before her principles. She should have retired and let Obama appoint someone new. Instead she chose to stay there until her death. Shameful and shortsighted.

Yeah, establishment Dems are going to have to move over for names like AOC who really have the spirit and will to fight with everything they have. Anyone who's still talking about neutrality or "working with the right" is honestly holding us back imo. Conservatism is dead and a big ugly fascists fungus has sprouted from its corpse. It's using every dumb hillbilly's fear of people who are different to retain power and make money. It's gross.

But we'll win in the end, I'm sure of it. I just hope the suffering is limited.

Would the GOP have actually let him appoint someone though  unless you mean she should have retired before 2010.

Honestly Ginsburg is who I blame most. I blame multiple factions, but so many people begged Ginsburg to step down-including Obama-and she refused. Incredibly arrogant.

im not too sure the Supreme Court would actually do this... I think republicans would FREAK out, because that would put their victories in the 2022 midterms at stake. Suburban women would revolt against the GOP like never seen before

This is untrue:

All Obama had to do was sign the bill and make it a priority, like he promised. He didn't.

Additionally, Biden flat out promised to codify Roe into law as president. He has all three branches of government. He didn't do it.

The Democratic Party has been using abortion rights to raise money for elections for at least two decades and, once elected, refuses to use their power to ensure that exactly what is happening now could never happen.

The left held their noses and voted for Clinton in disproportionately high numbers (including myself) and we're still getting blamed for her failures and the Democratic Party's failures. Enough is enough. Blame those who are actually responsible and leave us out of it.

I am so deeply disgusted.

The conservative justices all KNOW that overturning Roe vs Wade strips the court itself of all of it's integrity. The court itself is meaningless, now. Overturning Roe v. Wade is hugely unpopular with the general public. Very few people except the most hardcore religious zealots actually want this to happen.

We've truly entered the era of authoritarian GOP rule by radial Christians. These people push me further and further away from God everyday of my life. Religion, and the idea of a God of Man, is a curse on our society that holds us back from real progress.
