My parents used to be archaeologists and one of the things we’ve learned is as children from archaeologists is when we found a ‘suspicious object’ (something that looks like a bomb) to get away from it as soon as possible and to call the authorities. As I used to live in a northern province of the Netherlands, this is a province where there were a lot of intact bomb shells from the allies and the nazis due to WII and it was very dangerous. My parents actually found a bomb shell once, and they called the emergency hot line number to inform the authorities that they’ve found a bomb shell from WII and that it could still go off. The police made fun of them and didn’t take them seriously and my parents asked them: “oh, so you wouldn’t mind if we put it in our trunk and drop it off at your nearest police office?” and they changed their opinion the minute they’ve said that. They came to the location and looked at the bomb shell. Turns out, it was a bomb shell and the entire area had to be evacuated. The Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (a part of the Royal Dutch Army) had to come and they had to detonate the bomb shell themselves because it was too dangerous to move it. Those people should be very happy that they didn’t kill themselves and all of the people in their vicinity at the airport because people could’ve literally died.
