Very interesting article on Russian imperialism and how so many (obviously, not all Russians) do not view Ukraine as a legitimate nation. Incredibly depressing to realize the poet Joseph Brodsky was so awful about Ukraine (like apparently he also wrote that Ukrainians should get gang raped??...I didn't see it in this article.  However, people were mentioning there's some writing he did where he mentioned "all fours" and some interpret it as him comparing Ukrainians to animals while others saw it as a metaphor to rape).

According to Russia, Moldovans and Romanian are separate peoples despite identical language and cultural ties, while despite linguistic and historical differences, Ukrainians are Russians are the same.  To the Ukrainians, they say ''You don't exist as separate peoples from us, you are Russians''. To Moldovans they say ''You don't exist as Romanians as you historically identified, you are Slavs that happen to speak Romanian.'' This is logical fracture at its finest. Not to say, they also tried to push a Slavic identity in East Germany too, however that didn't catch on at all.
