I don’t see him as queerbaiting or being problematic. Even if he’s straight, experimenting with gender expressions is not just an LGBTQ thing. He may not identify as lgbtq, or maybe he does and is simply saying how he identifies is not anyone’s business but his own. I see this as a continued issue in lgbtq spaces where we latch onto any stereotypical “queer” thing and make inappropriate remarks about personal lives and bodies. If Harry Styles is LGBTQ, he will say so on his terms and is not obligated by his platform to be transparent about it. If he isn’t, I’m glad he’s an ally and fighting gender norms in his expression. No one owes you an explanation, and your disappointment in not being given one isn’t queer baiting at all.

I think I disagree because he didn't say sexuality wasn't important, he said labeling it wasn't the important part

In a world where "labelling" it is criminalized and in some places, a death penalty, I find it hard how someone of his fame (and also who's been famous for more than a decade) thinks "labelling" it isn't important...

Going on record claiming that people who care about sexuality are "outdated" is not being an ally. It's using privilege to dismiss something important.

You can just say "Sometimes, I have sex with men. Or I am straight but I have exprrimented with men." You don't need to label yourself to talk about queer sexuality. He can be private all he wants but then just say you don't want to speak about your sex life. Don't act like it's archaic. It's not. It's our lives

Just 'cause he doesn't think it's anyone else's business who he sleeps with (and it isn't :huntyga:) doesn't mean he can't support the LGBT community.

Be an ally, you're queerbaiting. Don't be an ally, you're a bigot. I wonder why some celebrities don't feel more comfortable disclosing the most intimate parts of their lives to the public :huntyga:

In general, I agree. But not in this instance. He stepped out of line by saying labels shouldn't matter. People are still fighting for equality. These things matter and it's not allyship to dismiss this. I don't need someone telling me labels shouldn't matter and we are all equal when trans healthcare is under attack and schools are trying to make queer people invisible.

i agree it shouldn’t matter, what’s his business is his business, i get irritated though because i think he’s queer baiting and knows how to play the game.

it also could be that he once started the idea of becoming a more visible LGBT ally that soon turned into an entire conept for his brand pushed by the pr team to cement his uniqueness in the public eye.. if it isn't on him to open up about this issue then noone would. From a capitalist perspective it makes little sense for him to actually come out  , him staying mysterious about it does more good than harm for his dollars just look at Shawn Mendes or Charlie Puth, their main audience is young, white, straight women anyway

It's not about pressuring him to come out and label his sexuality, it's calling him out for saying it doesn't matter about being visibly queer when our rights are being rolled back.

His entire image is heavily queer orientated and the fact he can't align himself as queer while he's heavily pandering to us comes off as him just profiting off of the community while keeping his straight fans happy

Honestly this should be a pinned post. This is the answer. 100%.

It would be convenient for Harry Styles if labels didn't matter, because he literally trades in this ambiguity. His team could very easily have put a ban on any questions about sexuality if he really wasn't comfortable talking about it, but they didn't. He thrives on this narrative of ambiguity. We queer people often don't have that luxury.

I see lots of people in this thread talking about allyship. But allyship is not the same as performative queerness. A straight ally donating to LGBTQ+ organisations helps our community. A straight ally wearing a spangly jumpsuit at Coachella just puts the focus on him, rather than on us.

The man has built an aesthetic upon queerness, but then starts clutching his pearls with the 'some things in life are personal!' shtick when he's pressed about it. No, Harry, you really don't get to have your cake and eat it. Not when our lives are on the line, not when our rights are being rolled back all around the world.

This is a man who wears dresses for photoshoots then goes home in jeans, who's happy to wear a frock as long as the world knows he's sleeping with Kendall Jenner, or Taylor Swift, or Olivia Wilde. Who will play a song about sucking d**k on his tour, but won't publicly align himself with our community when it counts the most. Who reaps the rewards for queerness without ever suffering the consequences we all face.

And if you build an aesthetic upon queerness, but distance yourself from publicly accepting that label when you're given the chance... it kinda looks like you've made a career out of cosplaying as the oppressed.

Anyway, I'll leave you all with the statistic than in 2019, LGBT adults globally held a combined buying power of approximately $3.7 trillion. As you were.

I’m usually whatever about queer baiting, but there is something about Harry that feels a bit dishonest. Like he capitalizes off of these things that are questionably queer while still being “straight” enough to maximize his marketability and pull all while not being clear about where he stands. TBH it kinda reminds me to David Bowie’s marketing back in the day. It’s just interesting, but who am I to talk. :iamfair:

Exactly, he's not shying away from the fact he is part of the community. If this isn't enough for people, that's the people's problem, not his.

Whenever I read a comment it is always just pure sense

Lmao, people dared to criticize Gaga for using bisexuality to cater to the LGBTQ community when Harry is the epitome of this at the moment.

I, personally, believe that he doesn't care wether or not people try to label him, as long as he gets to keep that mysticism around him. Once he comes out as either queer or just straight people will lose their interest and he knows that.
