FfFfFfFF 58,135
Russia's Deputy Commander stated Russia's goals include the occupation of southern Ukraine, which would allow Rusia acces to Transnistria. That said, the nuance here is that Russia should reach Moldova in order eventually take it sometime in the future, rather than to show an imminent threat - moreover, for the the treath to be imminent, Russia needs to capture Mykolaiv and Odesa (Ukraine's last big port after Mariupol was destroyed). Tiraspol is about 80 kilometers from Chișinău, Moldova's capital. Thefore the only way in which Moldova could be secured is by joining NATO: not a as a new member, as this would be a lenghty and laborious process, but through joining Romania. Just like support for NATO membership rose in Sweden and Finland after the war, so it did the idea of unification in Moldova and it will probably continue to do so as the war progresses.
