Vincem 380
As a Québécois, I always wondered what was the perception and views of people from english Canada, United States and around the world about Céline Dion. Cause nobody can have the whole Céline experience like we in Québec have it. We've known her since she was twelve and followed her to the top of the music industry around the world. She's the only Québécoise to have reached this much fame and we certainly feel like we have a special bond with her. She's like... ours. Haha. In Québec she is a HUGE gay icon. If you wanna make everybody sing in a gay karaoke bar, you put one of her song and the bar turns into a choir. But I always feel like she's left aside when people talk about gay icons in the english world. People talk about Mariah and Whitney, but you almost never see Céline being brought in the conversation. It also feels weird to know that a HUGE amount of people miss on half of her career. So much of Céline's french songs are classics to us. It kinda creates that feeling of special bond with her. She might be funny ans weird in english, she's so much more when she speaks french. So I wondered, what is your relation with the woman and her songs? What's your view? StrawberryBlond 14,819
Even as someone growing up in the 90's, I really didn't know much of her music. I'm British as well, where she has a big following. The only song that I knew back then was My Heart Will Go On as the movie was so big. I only found out about songs like Think Twice, It's All Coming Back To Me Now, etc. when I was older. I do remember when A New Day Has Come got featured on an annual greatest hits album, so it must have been popular, but I don't remember hearing it before hearing it on this album. The only time I ever saw her live on tv was when she performed Taking Chances on The X Factor once and doing album reviews, I reviewed her 2013 album, Loved Me Back To Life, but never did any more after that. I was surprised to find out how much The Colour Of My Love sold (20 million) and Let's Talk About Love (31 million) sold because out of all the singles released from those albums, I've only heard 2 respectively. Honestly, I'm surprised she has the following she does (her world tours have always been big and she's done sold out residencies for years) because I really don't know any of her songs. I can recognise her voice and all and I'm not saying her work is bad, it's just...never really been visible to me. I don't know of anyone who's a fan of her or been to see her so when I hear about her doing another multi-year residency, I always wonder what hold she has on the rest of the world. I consider her an icon and a legend but one that I barely know anything about.
Oriane 20,932
In France, her French songs are of course more popular than her English songs. She obviously doesn't have as much popularity as she has in Québec though. I think people usually find that she has a great voice (not everyone though, some find her irritating) but is always singing the same type of big cheesy songs. I met a few people who liked or were fans of her but in general, I think people will laugh at you a bit if you say that you like her. Robinladen 1,527
I think most people would see her as a vocalist in a sparkly glitter gown. But personally I do like her cooky side and the crazy outfits she sometimes pulls off. Im from Belgium so her French music is also popular here. But My Heart Will Go On is definetely her signature song. It does sometimes get played at parties still as the sing along moment. And when May comes around, she does is also still brought up in Eurovision compilations. The loss of her husband was well documented here, but otherwise Im not super aware of her personal life. I do think some older stars have damaged their reputations a little by looking botched, trying too hard to be young, giving bad performances, ... but Celine is really scandal free and always kept the respect people have for her. bionic 49,814
Rarely think of Celine as more than a vocalist but I'm surprised how many of her songs that I actually know when I look it up. Lots of pop culture classiques stream bionic
Leoooo 2,284
I was obsessed, and I mean like, genuinely obsessed with Titanic as a child (I was 5) Like after school I would watch it every day on the VHS. I always thought it was Rose who sang My heart will go on so when I would perfrom it to myself in my room and cry I thought of her ofc, but then my mother buys me the CD single of the song and there she is. Celine Dion. My words were "Who is this old woman?" (She was my current age, 28 lol) so I dont know if I can percieve her as anything but the old but not actually old woman who broke my dreams
holy scheisse 22,254
I perceive her as a vocal legend mostly adored by old millennials, gen x , and baby boomers who sings great, seems very warm and confident, with great ballads and beautiful gowns
Meat 18,962
She’s the biggest female artist of the 90s, a kind and humble legend, I also loved that she wrote Gaga’s profile for TIME magazine in 2019. Love her fashion sense as well.
Future Lovers 6,900
I perceive her as an absolute legend who has more than earned her place in the annals of history. I wasn't alive to see her peak, but I knew who he was from a young age. She was an absolute force to be reckoned with and even today there aren't many artists in her side of the industry that could compete with her when it comes to selling concert tickets. She is almost singlehandedly responsible for legitimizing the Vegas residency (no, she was not the first to do it, but she was the first to do it so big and so successfully) and that is perhaps one of the most influential things any artist has done in the 21st century.
