StrawberryBlond 14,774
Very confusing terminology and industry jargon but I get the gist. Enough of bulk buying from fans to manipulate charts, essentially. The charts are meaningless if the majority of the "hits" are bought by a small group of dedicated fans and outsiders looking at the charts are wondering wtf is going on. It's no wonder people think you can buy a #1 when stuff like this happens because we assume there's already rules in place to stop this when there actually isn't. They played by Billboard's rules and got their singles to the top of the charts the way it's intended to happen.. with bulk sales. I think it's also aimed at the likes of Taylor Swift, who is really into offering multiple album covers upon release. I know Folklore had at least 5 different covers to collect. I think she might have done that just before BB's last big rule change regarding bulk buying actually. Bulk buying really shouldn't be allowed, it takes advantage of young, impressionable fans who feel like the charts are massively important and it gives a false impression of what's actually popular. It's no wonder some artists think they have more fans than they actually do and why they can't sell out tours because it's just the same group of super fans re-buying stuff and not indicative of how many people are actually interested in their music. I LOVE kpop, but as it’s entering the american market with more and more groups charting and now American based kpop groups are in the making, in no time the charts are gonna start to look like a d*ck measuring contest between fandoms. I'm glad a fan recognises the downside of its popularity. It is a niche taste and niche tastes very rarely break through into mainstream hits, so when it does and it happens repeatedly, a matter of months or even weeks apart with the same band, the public will naturally cry foul. I don't know why BTS's fans can't see that their behaviour is what is turning people off from BTS and kpop in general. If more bands go this way, there could be a real backlash against kpop, it will be seen as the genre where its fans force the hits on the charts, where hits are gained through nefarious means, the genre that's always on the charts but who no one you know actually listens to. Organic hits are the achievement and it's sad that BTS have all these #1's gained purely through fan support, which, apart from Dynamite and maybe Butter at a push, will not be remembered by the wider public. They're in the history books now but people will look back on this years from now and wonder who on earth this band where and why they dominated so much for a number of years but made no impact. Since the inception of charts, we always attributed success to the art itself and the artist, be it radio support or fans buying multiple copies of your work. I just don’t think that your song becoming a trend is a measure of success with any merit. Trends fade but fan commitment creates legacies. Charts are trends. No one looks at a top 40 chart and goes "wow such artistic integrity" Charts only feed into the ego of people who care: the stans, to fuel mass consumption. It baffles me that we as a species are getting into such trivial details. It also puts in perspective that a "#1 album" has never just 1 meaning, and stan wars to buy copies etc is just helping capitalism, and for what? for an abstract place on a made-up list? We need to grow up... If this was 2010 here everyone will tell u that u are a crazy old man. we were like DIE and ready for BLOOD to give gaga a no. 1 kindest regards

That’s not entirely true, there were plenty of hits on the charts that reflected artistic excellence. It’s just with the time they keep becoming less and less due to things like the streaming era and tik tok. Fine dining and fast food can’t exist in the same place.
