moonsago 7,285
Honestly, good. I LOVE kpop, but as it’s entering the american market with more and more groups charting and now American based kpop groups are in the making, in no time the charts are gonna start to look like a d*ck measuring contest between fandoms. Ya’ll should see what charts are in South Korea... good God... talk about a numbers game, it’s so unrelated to the quality of the music or it’s relevancy with the public, it’s just a sales competition between fans. And of course business wise, it’s AMAZING, emotionally manipulating people to love the members themselves enough to buy whatever they put out and then mask it as musical success, is a genius business idea. Now that I am beyond the initial shock of how amazing kpop is, I can see things more objectivly and while they indeed produce generally AMAZING music and the quality is top notch with everything, when it comes to charts and numbers, the success is only on paper... it’s not a real reflection of how good the groups/artists are, it’s just about how popular they are. It’s not a hit if the general public is not into it. As an ARMY myself, its what pisses me off with my own fandom... they buy the music in bulk to make it chart and then act like they got a hit on their hand. It’s like sending presents to yourself on your birthday... you have the presents BUT WHERE ARe THE GUESTS? It’s sad. Billboard is afraid the charts will look the same soon in America as they do in SK and I am glad they took action. While they can still be manipulated by tiktok trends and so on, this is still a step towards showcasing REAL influence and relevancy with the general music listeners. SevenWonder 4,373
Tik Tok viral trends to me are NOT organic. Sorta the opposite. If anything defines hive mentality, it's a tik tok video going viral. The song itself is usually irrelevant as to why the video is viral. I actually like this change. So what if it lowers numbers? Those numbers, however anemic, will actually reflect how popular a song is. And since we're keeping things like charts, we might as well have them reflect a song's actual impact in the real world. Olivia was at #2 for these 10 weeks when BTS' songs were at #1. In the last week when Butter was at #1, Industry Baby was at #2, not Olivia so it could be 11 weeks. BuzzcutSeason 3,307
The reason is because of KPOP stans ala BTS bulk buying and not actually showing a clear representation of the people listening to the song. Butter was number one for so long, but it isn't actually a song most of the population here knows about on the same level as stats suggest.
RichAssPiss 4,932
The Billboard charts have become so easy to manipulate because sales numbers are so small these days (relative to streaming) that buying a few thousand physical copies can make you the most sold album in a week. So, limiting this to weed out people trying to manipulate the charts makes sense. Although I still feel like the novelty impact of streaming makes the charts seem a bit like a joke. Like any viral TikTok song, however cringe, can become a high charting song. Even if people watch it ironically or hate watch it. Whereas in the sales only era, only music people actually paid cash to purchase (and obviously wanted to hear) would chart high.
TEANUS 15,096
Why do they keep eliminating sales numbers even when sales are already dead.
